WEST QUINCY, Mo. (WGEM) — A BNSF train derailment in West Quincy has impacted an Amtrak passenger train to Chicago.

BNSF officials said the westbound train derailed around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning with cars able to be seen off the track just north of Highway 24.

The train had 70 cars in total and was mixed freight with nothing hazardous.  12 cars were off the track in total, five were on their side. The derailment did not affect nearby traffic on roads and there were no injuries reported.

Some of the train cars were idle on the BNSF train bridge over the Mississippi River. Marc Magliari with Amtrak told WGEM News that due to the train derailment in West Quincy, Amtrak had to charter buses to Chicago.

Magliari said the buses could not make the same time as the train and passengers would experience delays. Amtrak is expected to resume normal operations this evening.
