Barbara Lucille Shelman, 86, of Winfield, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at her home. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the Olds United Church of Christ. Burial will be in North Wayne Cemetery. Following the burial, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the church. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. A memorial has been established for the Olds United Church of Christ. Barbara L. Shelman was born on December 25, 1933 in Morning Sun, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Catherine (Wilson) Jackson. Barbara was a 1953 graduate of Morning Sun High School. On September 9, 1954, Barbara was united in marriage to Miles Edward Shelman. Barbara had worked as a sales clerk for Schramm’s Department Store prior to her marriage. When her children were older she worked at Parkview Nursing Home in Wayland as part of the kitchen/dining room staff. She was a very active member of Olds United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed volunteering at the church and WACO schools, crafting, reading, ceramics, and collecting Precious Moments. Her greatest enjoyment was the time spent attending her children and grandchildren’s school and sporting events.
Barbara will be deeply missed by her children, Miles Keith (Mary Jo) Shelman of Mt. Pleasant, Kenneth (Barbara J. Shelman) of Olds, and Jeanine Shelman-Ward (Douglas Ward) of Ankeny; eight grandchildren, Brandan (Kate) Shelman, Miles Adam Shelman, Spencer (Katrina) Shelman, Kathryn Ann Shelman, Gretchen Shelman, Ryan (Stacy) Shelman, Nathan (Kylie) Shelman, Drew Ward (Addie Crawford) and Darrian Ward; five great-grandchildren, Myranda Weiss, Kaiya Shelman, Landry Shelman, Keaton Shelman and Kensly Shelman; sister, Pauline Neff and several nieces and nephews.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Michael David Shelman; three sisters, Mary Varvel, Betty Keith and Charlotte Parkhurst and one brother, Dean Jackson.

Mike Kartel, 62, of West Burlington, died at 7:58 PM Monday, January 13, 2020.

Born December 29, 1957, in Illinois, he was the son of Joseph G. and Juanita Stephan Kartel. He was married to Lynn Kartel for many years had three children with her. They later divorced.

Mike graduated from Burlington High School, and went on to SCC to obtain his AA degree.

Mike owned and operated his own computer business. He also worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

He enjoyed golfing, playing pool and cards. He had a strong love for science, and also liked to race go-karts, RC cars and held a pilot’s license.

Survivors include his mother, Juanita Kartel; two sisters, Juli (Kelly) Kartel – Hill of Champaign, IL, and Debra (John) Yacko of Divide, CO; two daughters, Alaura (Kyle ) Rappenecker of Burlington, and Arrin (Sean Walker) Kartel of Burlington; one son, Jesse Kartel of Burlington; and one grandson Ian Rappenecker.

He was preceded in death by his father, his step-father Dean, one daughter, Terri, and two brothers, Steve and Joseph.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The memorial visitation for Mike will be 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Friday, January 31, 2020, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Irene I. Renshaw, 92, of Terre Haute, Illinois passed away at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, January 23, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa.

Irene was born on February 25, 1927 in Courtney, North Dakota the daughter of Henry and Emilie Werner Johnson. On January 18, 1944 Irene married Ellis Anders. He preceded her in death in April of 1952. Irene later married Dale E. Renshaw on February 5, 1972 in Blandinsville, Illinois.

She first worked for Dr. Robert Todd at North Hill Medical Center, following that worked as a beautician. Irene and her husband, Dale, owned and operated the Travelers Inn, LaHarpe, for many years. She also cooked for The Pink Tavern for many years. Irene worked for a short period at the Sheaffer Pen Company, Sylvania, IAAP, IRC and Fleetwood. She enjoyed canning, quilting and crocheting.

Survivors include four daughters: Karen (Wayne) Bowen-Swisher of Lomax, Maude (Harold) Ravenscraft of Lomax, Beverly Worley of Lomax and Beth (Jim) Vogel of O’Fallon, Missouri; one son: David (Loretta) Anders of Kirkwood, Illinois; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; one son: Dick Anders; two brothers: Ernest and Harry Johnson and two sisters: Margaret Rudolph and Mable Kract.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 27, 2020 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Nate McCarter officiating. Burial will follow in Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 26, at Banks & Beals.

Evan Dean Bachtell, age 64, of West Burlington, IA died at 10:07 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.
Born February 10, 1955 in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Thomas David and Velma Joy (French) Bachtell. He married Mary A. Weiler May 21, 1988 in Burlington.
Evan graduated from Burlington High School in 1973. He was semi-retired, working as a delivery driver for Heritage Park Pharmacy GRMC.
He was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church.
He was a member of the Southeast Iowa Regional Honor Guard, and was retired from West Burlington Fire Department. He also belonged to Skywarn, CERT, and was a member and past master of the Des Moines Masonic Lodge #1 A.F. & A.M.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Mary Bachtell of West Burlington; his mother, Velma of Burlington; three brothers, David (Julia) Bachtell of Donna, TX, Darrell (Cindy) Bachtell of Burlington, and Bruce (Della) Bachtell of Crossroads, TX; one sister, Susan (Dennis) Trudo of Mineola, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Dale.
The funeral service for Mr. Bachtell will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 27th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. David Bracht-Wagner will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, January 26th at Lunning Chapel. Masonic Rites will follow at 5:00 p.m.
Memorials have been established for the West Burlington Fire Department and Southeast Iowa Regional Fire Honor Guard.
