New destination for dog owners in Fort Madison

Fort Madison, Ia (KHQA)-  In their efforts to keep a younger generation in town, Fort Madison city officials are listening to the community.

Many community members expressed an interest in putting money towards a local dog park.

The $30 to $40,000 park is being constructed at a widely unused baseball diamond in Rodeo Park.

Adding amenities like these keep the forward momentum moving in a small town.

The land has already been tilled, and they will continue construction but leave dugouts behind for dogs and their owners to use for shade.

“We’d like to get more families moving here and keep younger people here. We are trying to do that with jobs and also with amenities and I think this amenity is especially attractive to a younger generation,” said City Manager David Varley.

The two-acre park will be completed by spring, having designated areas for both small and large dogs.
