Train derails in Keokuk

Keokuk, Ia. (WGEM) — The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a BNSF train derailed in Keokuk Sunday night.

Dispatch said the derailment happened around 10:20 p.m. on Mississippi Drive near the riverfront. Andy Williams with BNSF said seven cars and one locomotive were involved in the derailment.

Williams said the train was transporting a shipment for a private company and could not reveal the contents of the train, but did say that it was not hazardous and none of it was destroyed.

Officials said no officers responded to the scene, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the train derailment is unknown at this time. BNSF said it is handling the investigation.
