Area Recyclers ask residents not to trash recyclables

Burlington, Ia-  The Des Moines County Area Recyclers are seeing an increase in regular garbage being left at its drop off locations.  So much so that it may cause sites to close if the problem persists.

Area Recyclers Education Coordinator Darven Kendell told the Hawk Eye “Our drop-off locations are experiencing an inordinate amount of contamination,” and “The increase is troubling.”

Even though signs have been posted at each facility which shows what items are accepted and which aren’t, unacceptable items have been left in their recycling bins.

Additionally, people have not been removing plastic straps and packaging material from boxes before dropping them in the bins.

A new sign warning against improper item disposal has been posted at the West Burlington Location, which is the most used site.  The Sign warns that continued improper disposal at the facility could result in a facility closure.
