Burlington, Ia- The Burlington Civil Service Commission on Monday evening ruled to affirm the decision of Sheriff Johnstone and uphold the firing of former Deputy and Sheriff’s candidate Al Waterman.

Civil Service Co-Chairman Joe DeJesus made the announcement, “The Commission unanimously finds good cause for termination beyond a preponderance of the evidence.” Said DeJesus, “Accordingly, the commission unanimously affirms the termination of Alfred Waterman, by the Des Moines County Sheriff for each of the grounds set forth and the notice of termination dated April 8th, 2020.”

After two days of public hearings and a full weekend spent reviewing the evidence, the board decided there was sufficient cause for Waterman’s firing on grounds of insubordination, failing to report misconduct, breach of integrity, and lack of professionalism.
