Governor Reynolds warns schools on not following state guidelines

Johnston, Ia-  At a news conference on Tuesday Governor Reynolds responded to questions about schools “defying” her order that school districts hold in-person classes 50% of the time.

“Schools that choose not to return to school for at least 50% in-person instruction are not defying me, they’re defying the law,” said Reynolds.

This comes in response to two central Iowa schools in Urbandale and Waukee seeking to continue online learning full-time.

Reynolds stated that her proclamation had given flexibility to schools by providing temporary waivers for virtual classes, and giving parents the option to choose remote learning for their children.

But, Governor Reynolds says that “If schools move to primarily remote learning without approval, according again to the law, those days do not count towards instructional time.”

Reynolds says school administrator’s state licenses could be revoked if they do not start the year with in-person classes.
