Burlington, Ia-  On Monday the Burlington School board met and discussed their current plan for classes when school starts up again on August 31st.

The start of the school year was delayed due to a sudden surge of COVID-19 cases in Des Moines County.

The board discussed plans for how in-person classes will look this fall if they choose not to start classes online.  Curriculum director Cory Johnson stated that 260 students had enrolled in the virtual school option, and students attending in-person classes will use online learning on off days.

Edward Stone, James Madison, and BHS will have specific areas for internet access for students who need it.

Sporting events were also a main point of discussion.  Superintendent Pat Cohen said that if the county’s positivity rate increases over 15%, sporting events will be closed to the public and canceled if it exceeds 20%.  Sports and other extracurriculars will also be canceled if schools go to 100% online learning.

The board will make a choice on how to start the year, whether fully online or a hybrid schedule at a special meeting Wednesday.
