Sole occupant of home escapes house fire

Burlington, Ia-  The sole occupant of a single-family home remained unharmed after escaping a Burlington house fire.

At approximately 5:47 AM Saturday, January 23, 2021, the Burlington Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1619 Ashmun Street in Burlington.

Firefighters arrived at 5:52 AM to find heavy fire showing on the south side of the single-family home. The sole occupant of the home was alerted to the fire by working smoke detectors and was able to escape through a back door. The occupant was later assisted by a Burlington police officer that had arrived shortly after the 911 call. The occupant was treated at the scene by fire department paramedics and transported to Great River Medical Center in West Burlington for further treatment.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and declared the fire out at 7:28 AM.  Damages are estimated at $30,000 to the structure and $15,000 to contents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and is not considered suspicious.
