Des Moines, Ia-  On Wednesday, an Iowa State panel voted to advance a bill that reduces penalties for marijuana possession.

TV station KCCI reports that the Iowa Senate Judiciary Committee passed the bill, which would reduce the crime of possessing five grams or less of marijuana to a simple misdemeanor, rather than a serious misdemeanor.

Under the current law, the penalty for such an offense could be up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.  The bill is now eligible for debate on the Senate floor and would need to pass the house before going to Governor Reynolds.
