Dennis James Harwood, 70, of West Point, died Monday, May 17, 2021, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Born December 18, 1950, in Fairfield, IA, he was the son of Dale W. and Winetta Vorhies Harwood. On January 18, 2002, he married Vicki Lee (Evans) Carlson in Denmark, IA.

Dennis owned and operated car dealerships throughout his life. He had dealerships in the Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant areas as well as his most recent dealership, “Green Bay Motors”, in Wever.

Dennis enjoyed racing stock cars, fishing, going to flea markets and craft shows, and duck and pheasant hunting. He enjoyed working on his small farm, where he raised Boer goats for show. He loved his dogs. Dennis’ greatest enjoyment was spending time with his granddaughters who he adored. He was an all around good guy. He was a member of the ABGA (American Boer Goat Association) and Pheasants Forever.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki Lee Harwood of West Point, IA; step-daughter, Jenni (Terry) Hoenig of West Point, IA; two beloved granddaughters, Olivia and Chloe; two brothers, Donald Harwood and David Harwood both of Fairfield, IA; one sister, Sharon Vaughn of Vandalia, OH; and nieces and nephews, Wendy Harwood, Laury Scheidler, Daryn Harwood, Michelle Sperfslage, Charity Summerfield, Bonita Waters, Crystal Rich, Brian Johnson, Janelle Vargo, Brandon Vaughn, Jessie Harwood and Angela McClain.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Larry Harwood, and sister, Shirley Harwood.

Family will receive friends from 1 PM until 3 PM on Friday, May 21, 2021 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Harwood will be 3 PM Friday, May 21, 2021 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Dan Vaughn officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the service. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory following the service.

Burial will be held at a later date.

Memorials have been established for the VFW and Denmark Fire & Rescue.

Betty Jean Kramer Hootman, 88, of Burlington, died at 4:30 PM Friday, May 14, 2021, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born May 29, 1932, on her family’s farm in Oakville, Iowa, she was the daughter of William John and Lena Maude Rice Kramer. On March 25, 1956, she married Ralph David in Canton, Missouri. He died May 3, 2010.

Betty Jean wore many hats over the years. She worked a paper route, sold Avon Cosmetics, and worked for McCassen & Robbins. But most importantly she was a mother and grandmother.

She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, Bible School, and was very active in the church. She helped with summer camp for the handicapped, enjoyed visiting at residence at Klein’s, Girl Scouts, and the PTA. She collected beanie babies, clowns, and Santa Clause Figures and loved Christmas. She loved Elvis, playing bingo, board and card games and taking trips. Most of all she loved her family and being with them.

Survivors include her children, Cherylann (Servando) Gonzalez of Burlington, Michael (Krissi) Huthmann of Limestone, TN, Colette (Juan) Gonzalez of Burlington, Linda (Keith) Turrill of Burlington, Tracey (Cliff) Larsen of Burlington, Vanessa Bruss of Stockport, IA, Jason Hootman of Burlington; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three step-children, James (Karen) Hootman of Blue Springs, MO, Gloria Butrum of Saint Joseph, MO, and Billy (Juanita) Hootman of Raytown, MO; seven step grandchildren; 21 step great-grandchildren; 11 step great-great grandchildren; one sister, Priscilla Artz of Elk Grove Village, IL; one brother, Wayne (Jackie) Kramer of Olathe, KS; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Craig, one daughter, Jacquelyn, one grandchild, Servando Jr., one step grandchild, Ryan, two brothers, Ed & Bob, and one infant brother, William and, son-in-law, Neil Bruss, and one daughter-in-law, Patty Jurisch..

The family to receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM, Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hootman will be 1:00 PM Saturday, May 22, 2021, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Tammi Wirt officiating. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery.

A celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 PM until 7:00PM on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Perkins Park Room #4.

A memorial has been established for King’s Daughter’s.

Carol P. Staff, 81 of rural New London, died at 12:45 p.m. Monday, May 17,2021 at the Great River Hospice House.
Born February 3, 1940 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Lester and Inez (Dietsch) Stigge. She married Marlin Staff October 28, 1956 in Pleasant Grove Church. He died January 17, 2002.
Carol was a dairy farmer.
She was a member of Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Her hobbies included collecting succulents, canning, cooking, baking, painting and crafting, and spending time with family. She loved her Jersey cows.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula (Bob) Mehaffy of New London; five grandchildren, Erik, Jason, Mindy, Ashley and Alyshia; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Erma Reynolds of Oneida, IL.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter Sandra Gerken, son Leon Staff, grandson Billy Mehaffy, two sisters, and two brothers.
The memorial service for Mrs. Staff will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 22nd at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Kathleen Wohlers will officiate. Inurnment will be in Prairie Grove Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Lonnie Dean, 72, of Mediapolis, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2021 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm with a time of sharing at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 6, 2021 at Shelter One in Geode State Park. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Lonnie. The Snyder & Hollenabugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Mediapolis is caring for the family. Lonnie Dean was born June 7, 1948 in Burlington, the son of Floyd and Darlene (Bryant) Dean. On July 21, 1990, Lonnie was united in marriage to Waymath Creelman at 7 Ponds Park in Sperry. Lonnie owned and operated C.L.A.S.S Transportation until his retirement in 2017. He was a member of the American Legion in Mediapolis and CanAm Club in Tampa, Florida. Lonnie enjoyed traveling, motorcycles, antique vehicles and taking family vacations. The last couple of years Lonnie and Waymath enjoyed being camp host at the campgrounds of Geode State Park and Buena Vista Safari Ranch and RV Park in Evant, Texas.

Lonnie will be missed by his wife, Waymath of Mediapolis; children, David (Alisa) Dean of Austin, TX, Jeremy (Jessica) Dean of Mediapolis, James (Jeanene) Dean of Fort Madison, Darren (Erin) Steffener of Mediapolis and Nathan (Natalie) Steffener of Sperry; grandchildren, Caden and Joss Dean, Griffin Dean, Addison Dean, Josie and Zac Comeaux, Ella, Addison and Jessica Steffener and Haley and Luke Steffener; great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Grayson Comeaux; brother, Ralph (Rose) Dean of Morning Sun; sisters, Ann (Rick) Robinson of Keosauqua, and Trudy Hopkins of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
