Burlington, IA- The Burlington Community School District supports area families by providing summer meals for children. From June 1 to July 13, the District has served over 17,000 meals and the program will continue throughout the summer.
“It’s impossible for a child to be ready to learn if they’re distracted by a hungry stomach. Our Food Service Department stepped up to the plate when our families were hit with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, this program is a continuation of that,” said Superintendent Pat Coen. “This summer, we have been working closely with our partners at the USDA to ensure our students get the nutrition they need and can return to the classroom this fall, focused and ready to start the year on the right track.”
The district-wide Summer Meal Program has been made possible by the USDA and their Seamless Summer Meals Program. The program provides children under the age of 18 access to nutritious meals and snacks outside of the school year.
During the course of the summer, Burlington Community High School and North Hill Elementary have served as host sites for local families to pick up meals. Additional meals are delivered by the District mobile meal delivery system. Additional information and locations for the Summer Meal Program can be found on the District website.
