John D. Hostetter Jr., 74, of Burlington, died August 6, 2021 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
He was born June 19, 1947 in Burlington, Iowa he was the son of John D. Sr. and Melbaline (Hills) Hostetter. He was a graduate of Burlington High School and served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. He married Diane Nabors on January 15, 1966 in Bloomington, California.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and attending late model races at the racetrack. He was a Green Bay Packers and San Diego Chargers fan, loved playing cards and gambling at the casino. He and his son Roy used to sell baseball cards together.
He is survived by his wife Diane Hostetter of Burlington; three children, Roy Hostetter and John (Billie) Hostetter of Burlington and Frank (Jennifer) Hostetter of Iowa City, Iowa; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren with one on the way; his father, John Hostetter Sr. of Burlington and one sister Pam Bergquist of West Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be held at the Burlington Memorial Park Mausoleum.
According to his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Richard Louis Hockett, 68, of Des Moines, died Friday, August 6, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Born January 19, 1953, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Edgar and Evelyn (Stark) Hockett. He married Lacey Kinslow on June 22, 2013.He was a 1971 graduate of West Burlington High School. As a child, Richard raised chickens and was very active in 4H. He started mowing lawns as a teenager and eventually became owner and operator of his own lawn mowing company which he continued successfully until recently when he developed health issues. Richard worked for Umthun Trucking for a year before moving to Des Moines and continuing as a truck driver for TMC Trucking. He taught safety instruction, load securement, and was a road repair coordinator, until his retirement in 2019.

Richard was on the West Burlington Volunteer Fire Department for five years and served with the Burlington Fire Department for seven years. He also served with the West Burlington Police department reserves. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Indianola.
He loved attending the races with his children, grandson Dale and watching their sporting events.

He is survived by his wife Lacey; son Jeremy (Tanya) Hockett of Madrid, IA, daughter Katie Hockett of Norwalk, IA; stepchildren Jocelyn Irvin of Wilmington NC, Christina Guzman & Jasmine Guzman of Des Moines; 3-grandchildren Colton Anderson, Alicia Milburn and Dale Hockett; Siblings Janet (Don) Atherton of Georgetown, Tx., Nancy (Gary) Deen, Dan (Bev) Hockett and Sue Schowalter all of West Burlington; Aunt Barb (Lyle) Ireland of Burlington and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and one brother Edgar Jr.

Funeral services for Richard Hockett, 68, who passed away Friday, August 6, 2021 in Des Moines, will be held 4 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2021 at the First Assembly of God Church in Indianola. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. prior to service. Cremation will follow services.

Overton Funeral Home in Indianola are handling arrangements for the family.

Jo-anne Sharon Meyers, 90, of Burlington, was surrounded by loved ones when she was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on August 6th at 9:21 AM at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 20, 1931, in Monmouth, IL, she was the daughter of Ralph Patton and Viola Elizabeth Buehl Lusk. On February 10, 1952, she married Charles Lindberg “Lindy” Meyers in Monmouth, IL. He later passed on February 5, 2016.

She worked for National Research Bureau for seven years, and for the radio stations KKUZ/KCPS.

She was a 1949 graduate from Monmouth High School. She then went on to obtain her teaching degree from Monmouth College.

She was a member of Wings of Praise Outreach Church. She enjoyed writing, scrabble, arts & crafts, designing Easter eggs and hand carved snowflakes. She created “Mouse Mania” and gave programs to nursing homes, organizations, etc. for several years. She also organized 9/12 Project in Burlington and served as a leader. She was a member of DAV Auxiliary, Kappa Delta Sorority, and was the 9/12 Project leader.

While her family rejoices in her Heavenly Homecoming, she will be dearly missed by one son, Mark William (Robin) Meyers of Burlington; one daughter, Mary Anne (Robert) Henry of Burlington; four grandchildren, Frank Meyers, Kara Jo “Princess” Meyers, Jacob (Kayla) Henry, and Katelynn (Tyler) Deehring all of Burlington; four great-grandchildren, and her precious pup, Buddy.

Besides her husband, she was greeted in Heaven by her parents, one brother, and one sister.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Meyers will be 10:00 AM Thursday, August 12, 2021, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Brenda Distelhorst officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

A memorial has been established for Wings of Praise Building Fund and the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Bernice Lucile Little, 96, of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away at 12:58 p.m. Friday, August 6, 2021 at the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst.
Bernice was born on January 30, 1925 in Macomb, Illinois, the daughter of Lloyd Lacey and Nellie Gay (Wilhelm) Lanier. On November 21, 1943 she married Guy Wayne Little in Macomb, Illinois. He preceded her in death on August 12, 1972.
Bernice was a graduate of Industry High School. Following graduation she worked for a short time in Macomb. Early in their marriage, Bernice and Wayne lived in Macon, Georgia, where he was stationed. During Wayne’s deployment she returned to Macomb before settling in Stronghurst. Bernice worked as a secretary for McFall & Grigsby Insurance Agency in Stronghurst for 12 years after Wayne passed away.
Bernice was a member of Stronghurst United Methodist Church, where she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, helped with Bible School, and was active on several church committees. She was also a member of the Stronghurst American Legion Auxiliary and The Order Of The Eastern Star.
Survivors include two daughters: Patricia (Philip) Peterson of Batavia, Illinois and Pamela (Todd) Stevenson of Stronghurst, Illinois, one daughter-in-law: Jody Little, five grandchildren: Curt Little, Nicholas Fittante, Stephen Little, Patrick Peterson and Kendra Peterson, and two great-grandchildren: Draven and Piper.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one son: Lloyd Wayne Little.
The funeral service for Mrs. Little will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor Scott Collier officiating. Burial will follow in the LaHarpe Cemetery.

Doris Joan Warth, 85, of New London, died Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. She was born in Lee County, Iowa September 15, 1935 to Andrew Henry and Bertha Mabel Murphy Hammer.
On October 22, 1966 she married Donald Wesley Warth in West Burlington; he preceded her in death.
She attended Lee County Country School through 8th grade and then attended Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Mrs. Warth was a homemaker and was of the Christian faith. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, and when she could hear…listening to Doris Jean play and sing songs she wrote, crocheting and knitting, going for car rides, and when able she enjoyed sitting outside visiting with friends and neighbors.
Survivors include her daughters Gloria Ann Stenner of Burlington and Doris Jean Warth of New London, one son Donald Wesley Jr. of New London, and five grandchildren, Eugenia, Tamera, Jolene, Ryan and Tyler. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Kenneth Hammer and sisters Grace Peek and Mary Wills.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm, Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Elliott Chapel, New London with the family receiving friends from 5:00 until the time of the service. Karen Schantz, 82, of Wapello passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Wapello Specialty Care. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the Wapello Cemetery. Karen Jean Trier was born on March 30, 1939 at the Washington County Hospital, the daughter of Charles Cleo and Ruth Kathryn (Picken) Trier. Karen was a 1956 graduate of West Chester High School. On December 28, 1962, she was united in marriage to John Joseph Schantz. Karen was the owner and operator of The Grandview Country Café for over 15 years; she was involved in Shriner’s with her husband, John and in her earlier years bowling. Her greatest enjoyment was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Karen is survived by her children, Cindy Singleton, Greg (Cathy) Greiner, Jeanne (Paul) Nichols, Chris (Kenny) Freeman, Julie Rich and John Jr. (Joellen) Schantz; 16 grandchildren, Stacey (Michael) Briggs, Michael (Jennifer) Singleton, Cody (Kenna) Greiner, Ryan (Jennifer) Greiner, Megan (Jay) Smith, Kori (Alex) Buffington, Britney (David Klein) Yotter, Bailey (Cameron Kemmer) Yotter, Caleb Spate, Carley (Chris) Rapp, Jacie (Kevin Essig) Spate and Jamie (Jack Stefanski) Spate; great-grandchildren, Ryleigh, Annaka, Jaxton, Chase, Sinjn, Bentley, Hudson, Olive, Sam, Jude and one more great-grandson on the way; siblings, Sharon (Gail) Niffenegger, Dick (Ruth) Trier, Joelyn Zickefoose and John (Nancy) Trier and brother-in-law, Gilbert Brown.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John on November 28, 2007; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dillon and Peg Schantz and brother-in-law, Les Zickefoose; son-in-law, Mike Singleton and sister, Margaret Brown.
