Danville, IA-  A Danville student has issued an apology for an incident where they wore blackface makeup to a school volleyball game.

The incident occurred after a photo from a volleyball game between Danville and New London, which showed a student dressed in a nun costume, with their face painted completely black, began to circulate online.

The game was meant to be a “blackout”, a common tradition where students come to the game dressed in all black clothing.

The student posted an apology on the school’s Facebook page, saying “I am sorry for the uneducated decision I made to paint my face black for the blackout night.  I had zero intent of being racist. It didn’t even cross my mind. As for the nun costume, it is a trend on social media. I wasn’t trying to make fun of any religion. I would like to apologize to the African American community, my friends and family, my church, and my community.”

The school district issued a statement saying that “The Danville Community School District strives to create a safe educational environment for all the differences in a school population. The Danville Community School District does not tolerate any forms of racism or discrimination within the school community. Any instances of racism or discrimination will be handled justly and appropriately to ensure that the education environment stays safe for all students.”
