Burlington man arrested for OWI

Burlington, IA-  The Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a Burlington man on multiple charges.

On Monday, September 27th, 2021, at about 6:40 AM a Des Moines County Deputy observed a vehicle traveling at 55mph in a 30mph zone on Sunnyside Ave near Brick St.

The deputy turned around and attempted to stop the vehicle, which then ran over a stop sign, a fire hydrant, and then crashed into a residence at Sunnyside Ave. and Brick St.  The vehicle then backed into a Des Moines County squad car before coming to a stop.

The driver of the vehicle was detained and identified as 34-year-old Richard Laurence Thompson of Burlington.  Thompson showed signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking. Thompson was arrested and taken to the Des Moines County Jail.

At the jail, Thompson failed the standard field sobriety test and gave a breath sample over the legal limit.  Thompson was charged with operating while intoxicated, speeding, reckless driving, failure to maintain control, striking fixtures upon a highway, and no insurance.
