Megan Hines, 55, of Burlington, died Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at her home.
Born July 7, 1966 in Burlington, Iowa she was the daughter of Thomas Oliver and Shirley Audreen (Fulton) Hines.
Megan was a Direct Support Professional for Home Caring Services for 23 years and more recently for Hope Haven.
She was a member of First Christian Church ~ Disciples of Christ.
Megan brought smiles and laughter to everyone she came in contact with. She was very kind hearted and giving, her joy truly was helping people. She was everyone’s go-to person and gave the best advice. She set goals for herself and others and helped accomplish them. She tended to have more of a love for animals than people.
Survivors include her three sons; Micah Hines, Tobias Hines and Jeremiah Hines all of Burlington; many foster children throughout the years; two sisters, Cathy (Kirk) Watson and Tamara (Joel) Behne both of Burlington and many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Robin Sheagren, one brother, Timothy Hines and one nephew Jedidiah Behne.
The memorial funeral service for Megan will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 22nd at First Christian Church ~ Disciples of Christ. Her nephew Mr. John Marron will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service.
Memorials have been established for P.A.W.S. in Fort Madison or to Great Pyrenees Rescue Inc., of Iowa.

Larry E. Clawson, 82 of Danville died Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at Danville Care Center.
Born November 3, 1939 in Butte, MT, he was the son of Ernest Lavern and Nellie (Dowling) Clawson. He married Harriet Potter. They later divorced.
Larry worked for Hughes aircraft and as an engineer before moving to Nebraska. He then began working for Roto-Rooter in Omaha NE. Larry enjoyed volunteering for the Red Cross and the animal shelter; he was responsible for transportation of pets from shelter to shelter. Larry liked to watch sports and had the utmost appreciation for red corvettes. You could often find him walking with his walking partners in Omaha.
Survivors include son Eugene Clawson and daughter Annette Clawson both of Middletown, IA and brother Ken Clawson of Montana. He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister Arlette.
Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. Inurnment will be at a later date at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

Richard Mellinger, 90, of Burlington, died at 9:45 AM Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab in Cedar Rapids.

Born October 3, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Fred William and Sophia Elizabeth Stoller Mellinger. He graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1949. On May 29, 1955, he married JoAnn McQueen in Burlington. JoAnn died November 12, 2005. They celebrated 50 years of marriage together.

Richard served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean war.

His first job was at Sweetheart Bakery in Burlington. Richard later became a life insurance salesman and financial planner for Minnesota Mutual/Minnesota Life.

He was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion, and a volunteer with the Senior Citizen Group. Richard was very involved with the Burlington Community School District. He was the first president of the Burlington High School Athletic Booster Club and loved announcing for football, wrestling, track, softball, and occasionally baseball. Richard was very proud to have the BHS wrestling tournament named after him. When he wasn’t volunteering, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and caring for her, fishing, attending the Drake Relays, and watching the Hawkeyes, Bears, and the Cubs. He loved watching the Cubs win the World Series in 2016.

Survivors include his four children, Becky (Jim) Koehler of Burlington, Robin (Lou Ann) Mellinger of Hills, Rick (Laura) Mellinger of Burlington, Steve (Lenora) Mellinger of Brunswick, GA; twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Loretta (Bill) Dixon of The Villages, FL, and Marjorie (Jim) Roth of Waukee.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill Mellinger.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, November 22, 2021 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Mellinger will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Reverend David J. Yonker and Reverend Brooke Anthony officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at First Christian Church following the burial.

A memorial has been established for Burlington High School Wrestling.

Warren Gustav Hohmbraker, 94, of Sperry, died at 10:40 AM Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

Born May 18, 1927, at his family’s homestead outside of Sperry, IA, he was the son of William G. and Alma Young Hohmbraker. He married Maxine Myers and they later divorced. On May 27, 1954, he married Mary Louise Vollmer in Mediapolis. She later passed December 25, 2020.

Warren was a life long farmer. He started working on his family’s farm after he finished 8th grade at Piney Wood County School. He wore many hats over the years, from thrashing grain, baling hay and driving trucks. He was also know for the many horses that his family raised, showed and sold over the years. He had a great passion for caring for animals and the land, which he passed on to his family and great granddaughters, Hailey and Adalynn.

He went to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis and later attended Kingston Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Hereford Association, Mississippi Valley Morgan Horse Club, Hawkeye Morgan Horse Club, and Louisa County Saddle Club along with his wife. Warren enjoyed sitting around and visiting with everyone. He loved to go to State Fairs and Moran Horse Jubilees. He was always helping with church and local events. Warren will be remembered as a hard working man who would help anyone in a instant.

Survivors include his daughter; Marvalene (Randy) Cousins of Burlington, and one son; Kenneth (Susan Swailes) Hohmbraker of Danville; five grandchildren, Heather (Jeremy) Wick of Mediapolis, Shayla Cousins of Eddyville, Trisha Klaus of Danville, Patrica Hohmbraker of Salam, IA, and Windy (Aaron) Bell of Danville; six great grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Henry Gilbert Hohmbraker.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Marcus Leroy Green, 73, of Burlington, died Monday, November 15, 2021 at his home.
Born February 23, 1948 in Burlington, Iowa he was the son of James A. and Iva Mary (Reynolds) Green. He married Mary Ann Marshall on July 20, 1979. She died September 7, 2002.
Marcus worked for the City of Burlington for 28 years. After his retirement he worked for Raider Precast until they closed. He was a member of the Burlington Eagles #150 and the Burlington Moose Lodge. He was a man of his word, was loyal and loved hard. He was a well known scrapper around town.
Survivors include two sisters, Betty Lamb of Burlington and Tonda Wilcox of Burlington; special cousin Kenny Reynolds; special niece Patty Wever and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Ann, sisters Mary Lee Brown, and sisters Marsha Steele and Martha Green (in infancy), who he was triplets with.
The graveside funeral service and inurnment for Marcus will be at a later date.

Wendell Laybourn Link, age 92, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at SunnyBrook, Burlington, Iowa.
Wendell was born October 13, 1929, near LaHarpe, Illinois, to Lewis P. and Eva L. (Laybourn) Link. He married Eleanor Klossing in Dallas City, Illinois, on July 27, 1951. She preceded him in death on July 30, 2020.
Wendell was raised on a farm southeast of LaHarpe, attended Oak Hill country school and graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1947. He enlisted in the National Guard in November of 1950. A Korean War veteran, Wendell served in active duty from February of 1952 through September of 1953 in the 1st Field Artillery Observation Battalion, 44th Artillery Division. He also graduated from the Far East Command Chemical School at Camp Gifu, Japan. Sergeant Link was awarded two Bronze Stars for heroism.
Wendell was honored to serve on the board of directors for Hancock County FS for fourteen years. He was a longtime member of the American Legion, Farm Bureau, and the Union Church, where he served on the building committee. Wendell was an avid reader with a keen interest in geography. He traveled extensively in his lifetime. Wendell and Eleanor owned a condominium in Osage Beach, Missouri, for 11 years. They loved relaxing at the lake. He took great pride in his community and being a farmer.
Survivors include three children, Bradley (Sheila) Link of LaHarpe, IL, Barbara (Alan) Mehaffy of Burlington, IA, and Susan (Wayne) Bray of LaHarpe, IL; ten grandchildren, Amy (Mike) Pratt, Chatham, IL, Amanda (Michael) Donaldson of LaHarpe, IL, Teri Finch and Christopher Link, both of LaHarpe, IL, Brian (Amanda) Mehaffy of Blandinsville, IL, Mitchell (Jenna) Mehaffy of Cambridge, IL, Hayley (Joe) Lindquist of Burlington, IA, Randy (Kelsi) Bray of Colchester, IL, Kevin Bray and Paige Bray, both of LaHarpe, IL; one sister, Jean Louden of LaHarpe, IL; fourteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and siblings, Louise Boren, Bob Link, Luella Bowen, Donald Link, Dorothy Kern, Wayne Link, and Leah Hicks.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 21, 2021 at the Union Church in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Geottsche officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow in the LaHarpe Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Beverly May Smith, 87, of Burlington, died on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at Ridgeview Assisted Living in Burlington.

Born May 10, 1934, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Rudolph Oscar and Ida Mae Rose Fehse Lucas. On March 14, 1954, she married Ralph Leslie Smith in St. John’s Church of Flint River Township. He passed away on May 3, 2014.

Beverly was a payroll clerk/bookkeeper for Simpson Security Papers in Burlington.

She was a member of St. John’s Church of Flint River Township. Beverly liked to crochet and bake. She loved traveling in the RV with her husband, especially to Arizona to see family. She greatly loved her grandkids.

Survivors include her children, Anthony L. (Chris) Smith of Mountain View, WY, June L. (Kim) Morgan of Burlington, Rosemary I. (Kevin) Blint of Fort Madison; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 1 brother, LaVerne R. (Paula) Lucas of Burlington.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Lyle Lucas.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The memorial service for Beverly will be 2:00 PM Sunday, November 21, 2021, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Wally Reynolds officiating. Family will greet friends prior to the funeral service.

Jay R. Hamann, 85, of Burlington, and previously of Green Bay, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at his home.
He was born January 15, 1936 in Windom, Minnesota to Roy and Edna Finnern Hamann of Sioux Valley, MN. On July 6, 1963, he married Nancy Dodds in Danville, Iowa. A graduate of Sioux Valley High School, he also received Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees from the University of Minnesota.
Jay worked at Collin’s Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Honeywell in Minneapolis, MN; Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana; University of Colorado in Boulder, CO; University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN; and Schreiber Foods in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He was active in the United Methodist Church and was instrumental in the startup of the New Hope United Methodist Church in De Pere, Wisconsin. For 25 years, he was president of the Green Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Board.
Survivors include his wife Nancy of Burlington; son Byron of Princeton, New Jersey; sisters Judith Hintze of Windom, MN and Mary (Jim) Hansen of Edina, MN; brother John (Deloris) Hamann of Lake Park, Iowa; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Leonard Hintze.
According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a private graveside service will be held at Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville. Memorials in honor of Jay may be directed to Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice; Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County; and Friends of Geode State Park, New London, Iowa. Merrill A. Miller, 99, of Burlington, died Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.
Born May 2, 1922 in Burlington, Iowa he was the son of Clarence C. and Alberta (Fisher) Miller. He married Florence Douglas in Caerphilly South Wales Great Britain on June 19, 1944. She died November 3, 1985.
He served in the Army during WWII as a Sgt. Tech 5.
Merrill worked as a Brakeman for Burlington Northern and a Switchman for CB&Q railroads for 46 years until his retirement in 1983.
He was of the Roman Catholic faith. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainman, VFW, UTU where he served as the grievance chairman for many years and the Eagles Aerie #150.
He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and was an avid coin collector. He loved traveling on cruises and enjoyed tending to his flower and vegetable gardens. His family lovingly gifted him in recent years by naming the Bracewell Stadium field in his honor.
Survivors include his long-time friend Mary Flieg of Sigourney, Iowa; his four children, Barbara (Fred) Schoell of Overland Park, Kansas, Lillian Krehbiel of Omaha, Nebraska, Margette (Jerry) Wiemann of Burlington and Merrill “Pete” (Peggy) Miller of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Florence, son LaVerne Miller, siblings Laverne W. Miller, Agatha Cobb, Lucille Wickerham and Mary Angeline Graham, daughter-in-law Diana Miller and son-in-law Mike Krehbiel.
The funeral service for Mr. Miller will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 19th at Lunning Chapel. Mr. Jerry Wiemann and Mr. Wil Wiemann will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 18th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. A Catholic prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. by the Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz.
