Burlington, IA-  The man known by many as “Mr. Burlington” has died.

Tom Walz, a former Burlington police officer, and volunteer with multiple local organizations passed away on Wednesday.

Burlington Mayor Jon Billups said in a post on social media that “He lived the ideal of giving you the shirt of his back if you needed it. He had immense love for this community and its people.”

In that same post, Billups announced that all flags in the city will be lowered in Walz’s honor at the request of the City Council.

Burlington Police Department Major Jeff Klein says in a news release Thursday that, “Tom Walz exemplified the epitome of what the Burlington Police Department aspires to offer its citizens,” Klein said.  “There are no words to adequately express what Tom Walz meant to this Department and to this community.”

Walz worked in the BPD from 1980 until 2016.
