Fort Madison, IA- A corrections officer who was assaulted by an inmate Friday at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison has been released from the hospital.
Iowa DOC Communications Director Nick Crawford told the Pen City Current that family had notified the state the officer had been released. Crawford said the officer would not be identified for medical privacy reasons.
On Saturday, the DOC confirmed that the inmate approached the officer at his post and a short time after the inmate began assaulting the officer. Nearby staff were alerted and responded to restrain the inmate.
The officer was transported by department vehicle to the local hospital and after further evaluation was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for examination and observation.
The incident is still under investigation.
