Burlington, IA-  The Burlington School Board has approved a revision to its mask-wearing policy.

The Hawk Eye reports that the board approved the first reading of a newly revised tier-based system for determining when students and staff wear masks.  The vote came after the board had voted to change the metrics for the school’s mask policy.

The amendment, which was approved by a 6 to 1 vote, reduces the school’s mask policy from 3 tiers to just 2.

Tier 1: Masks optional if the county positivity rate is 12% or lower

Tier 2: Masks required in all buildings during regular school hours when students are present, including PIECES and Club M, but masks optional at after school events such as concerts and sporting events if the county positivity rate is 12.1% or higher.

The motion was passed as a first reading, meaning it will need to be approved again at the next board meeting.
