Burlington Police Department conduct tobacco compliance checks

Burlington, IA-  On Wednesday, January 19th, 2022 and Thursday, January 20th, 2022, the Burlington Police Department conducted tobacco compliance checks at thirty-two businesses located within the greater Burlington area.

Police worked with underage buyers who entered the establishments. Twenty-six businesses refused to sell to the underage buyers while six businesses did sell. The employees who sold to the underage buyers were cited for Supplying Tobacco to Minors as an employee of the establishment. The offense is a simple misdemeanor.

The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division will be notified for potential civil penalties against the tobacco license holders. Funding for the tobacco compliance checks was provided by the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.

Additional tobacco compliance checks will be conducted periodically throughout the year.
