West Burlington man arrested for theft, forgery

Burlington, IA-  The Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a West Burlington man for theft and forgery.

On Wednesday, February 9th, 2022, at about 11:11 AM Des Moines County Deputies arrested 35-year-old Trevor James Johnston of West Burlington for 1st-degree theft and forgery.

Johnston’s charges stem from an investigation in which Johnston was attempting to purchase a residential property in Danville, IA.  Sheriff’s Office Investigators found that Johnston agreed to purchase the property from the victims for $110,000.00.

Further investigation showed that Johnston passed fraudulent documents at the Des Moines County Courthouse to obtain ownership of the property.

The victims, in this case, lost possession of the property and were out $109,990.00 prior to the fraudulent documents being noticed.  The property has since been returned to the victims.

Johnston is being held in the Des Moines County jail on a $5000.00 bond.
