Obituaries for Tuesday February 22nd

Jeanette Marion Fisher, 98, of Burlington, died peacefully after a month battle with COVID at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House on Sunday, February 20, 2022.

She was born January 16, 1924 in Burlington, Iowa the daughter of George Edwin and Stella Anna (Wagner) Sleater.  She married Ray Fisher on February 15, 1947 at her parents’ home in Burlington.  He died April 6, 2006.

Jeanette worked as a secretary at the Iowa Soap Company for six years from 1941-1947.  She then worked for 28 years as secretary for the Burlington Community School District, until her retirement in 1988.

She was a lifelong member of Zion United Church of Christ and was a member of the Zion Quilters and the Christian Service Circle.  She served six years on Consistory and was a member of the Archives and Memorial Committees.  She was past president of Corse School PTA, past president of What-So-Ever and served on the board for King’s Daughters for over 23 years.

She was a volunteer for R.S.V.P. and the Welcome Center and recently received the mayor’s award for her lifetime achievement with volunteer work.  She was a Charter Member of P.E.O. Chapter OW.

Jeanette enjoyed quilting, crocheting and needlepoint.  She played in numerous bridge clubs and loved growing flowers in her yard.  In her earlier years she enjoyed boating, water skiing, playing tennis and traveling, especially trips to visit family.  In later years, she took an interest in coloring and completed many beautiful works of art.

She is survived by her three children; Nancy (David) Wenstrand of Columbia, Maryland, Robert (Donna) Fisher of Johnston, Iowa and Timothy (Jaclyn) Fisher of Denton, Texas; seven grandchildren, Patricia “Trish”, Douglas, Julie, Kyle, Kera, Brian and Kelly; great grandchildren, Caroline, Andrew, Rae, Levon, Kinley, Laiklyn, Landrick and Max; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray, her daughter Gretchen Reilly and one sister Marjorie Ralston.

The funeral service for Mrs. Fisher will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 26th at Lunning Chapel.  The Rev. Brice Hughes will officiate.  Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service.

A memorial has been established to Zion United Church of Christ.

 

Glenn Irvin Butlin, 66, of Burlington, died Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at his home.

Born May 8, 1955, in Highland Park, IL, he was the son of Richard Butlin and Lucille Barns.

Glenn was a truck driver for many years.  He later helped install heating and air units with his friend Rick.

He enjoyed motorcycles and collecting coins, guns and knives. He loved the river.

Survivors include his mother, Lucille Barns of Joplin, MO; uncle, Eugene Henson; special friends, Rick and Jammie Crawford of Burlington and his friends in Burlington. He was known as Uncle Glenn to Aimee, Rhian and Jed.

He was preceded in death by his father, grandfather, Clarence Striegel and a sister.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.

Phillip Harold Schwartz, 89, of Burlington, died at 8:04 PM Friday, February 18, 2022, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born March 27, 1932, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Carl Phillip and Myrtle Vera Atkinson Schwartz. On July 29, 1956, he married Dottie Lea Johnson in Salina, KS. She died October 11, 1985.

He was a 1951 graduate of Burlington High School.

Phil was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War as an Airman First Class. He received both a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal during his service.

He worked for Scheaffer Pen Company as a tool and die maker, and then as a Manufacturing Engineer for J.I. Case Company for twenty years.

Phil was a familiar face at Country Friends, with his dear friend Judy. He enjoyed woodworking, crafting, antiques, flower gardening, and spending time at the Auction Barn and at his cabin on the Mississippi River.

Survivors include three daughters, Debora Lea (David) Dixon of Burlington, Diana Lynn (Brett) Mayhugh of Burlington, and Donna Louise (Eric) Renteria of Burlington; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, Dottie, he was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Pearl Evelyn Butherus.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at Prugh’s Chapel, 317 N. 4th St. in Burlington.

Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Prugh’s Chapel, 317 N. 4th St. in Burlington. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Betty Louise Cook, 84, of Burlington died Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at her residence.

Born August 16, 1937 in Rogers, Texas she was the daughter of Thomas Lee and Vera (Moss) Newsom.

Betty graduated from Buckholt High School in Buckholt, Texas

On November 8, 1953, she married Merlin “Mick” K. Wirt and they later divorced. On February 4, 1978, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, she married Charles G. “Chuck” Cook. He preceded her in death on December 29, 2007. She was a member of Sperry United Methodist Church.

Betty worked and retired from AGRI Grain Marketing after 40 years, then worked part time for the FSA office and Hope Haven where she helped the clients. She enjoyed gardening, dancing, playing cards including pitch, Phase 10 and Skip-Bo, craft shopping, the casino especially the penny slots, trips to Texas but Most of all spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her son Michael (Deb) Wirt of Burlington, Iowa; three grandchildren, Nichole (Andrew) Mark of Argyle, Texas, Collin (Amanda) Wirt of Des Moines, Iowa, and Aaron (Mallory) Wirt of Burlington, Apryl (Chris) Johnson of Middletown; nine great grandchildren, Hudson, Easton, Presley, Charley, Graydon, Holden, Henna, Conor, and Scarlett; one sister-in-law, Alta Newsom of Dallas, Texas.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Nicky Lee Wirt and six brothers and one sister.

Friends may call after noon until 7:30 p.m.  on Thursday, February 24th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

The funeral service for Betty Louise Cook will be Friday, February 25, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. at Lunning Chapel with Rev. Tamara Wirt officiating. Internment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Jason Leon Winters, age 47, of Dallas City, Illinois, passed away at 12:29 a.m. Saturday February 19, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Fort Madison, Iowa.  He was born February 5, 1975 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Paul Michael and Debra Sue Zang Winters.

 

Jason was a 1993 graduate of West Burlington (Iowa) High School.  He was a pipe insulator and had worked for M&O Insulation out of Peoria, Illinois for the past 25 years.  He was a member of Local 81 Pipe Insulators Union of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

 

In his spare time, Jason loved riding his motorcycle, 4-wheeling, fishing, boating,  and most importantly, spending time with his nieces and nephews.  He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.

Survivors include his parents, Paul and Debbie Winters of Stronghurst, grandmothers: Jewel Winters of Galesburg, IL, and Phyllis Zang of Monmouth, IL, two brothers: Chris (Jesse) Winters of Stronghurst, Travis Winters of Stronghurst, one sister: Ariel Zang of Oquawka, IL, and six nieces and nephews: Landon, Gracey, Lauren, Liam, Kenzley, and Weston.  He was preceded in death by his grandfathers: Leo Winters and Larry Zang.

Tony Lloyd Weinreich, 81, of New London, died Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.  Ten hours later, his beloved wife, Elsa, followed him into Heaven.  Tony was born February 11, 1941 in Burlington, Iowa to Chris Jon and Barbara Weinreich.  He was a graduate of Burlington High School and served in the United States Navy.  He was a member of the New London Christian Church and worked as a correctional officer at the Medium Security Unit in Mt. Pleasant until his retirement.

Elsa Delgado Weinreich, 83, died Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Henry County Health Center, Mt. Pleasant.  She was born October 31, 1938 in Camaguey, Cuba to Jose and Araceles Delgado.  Following high school, she graduated from the University of Havana and then taught kindergarten in Cuba.  Her family waited five years until they were admitted into the United States.  She worked in the dietary department at the Mental Health Institute and then the Medium Security Unit until she retired. She was a member of the New London Christian Church.  Elsa and Tony were married in Burlington; you never saw one without the other.  They enjoyed camping at Lake Wilderness where Tony pretended to enjoy fishing.  They loved spending time with their grandchildren and Elsa was quite a collector.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.  Elsa was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Enrique Delgado and her beloved husband, Tony.  They are survived by Elsa’s son Rick (Laura) Chappotin of Pensacola, Florida; their son Chris (Jessica) Weinreich of Oskaloosa; five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM, March 5, 2022 at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Rod Cooper officiating.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service.  Inurnment will immediately follow at Burge Cemetery, New London, with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard.  In honor of Tony and Elsa, a memorial has been established.
