Eldon, IA-  A southeast Iowa school district will become the fourth district in the state to implement a 4 day school week.

The Cardinal School District board in Eldon voted on Monday to approve a transition to a four-day school week starting in August.  The district will add 20 to 30 minutes to every school day to make up for the extra day off.

District Superintendent Joel Pederson tells radio Iowa that he believes this shift will help with teacher retention.  “Different generations value different things,” Pedersen says. “You look at some of the younger teachers. They talk a lot about time and time being more important than necessarily money.”

Cardinal will become the fourth school district with a four-day week when the 2022-23 school year begins.  Other schools in the state with a similar schedule include WACO, Mormon Trail, and Moulten-Udell.
