Robert William Lammers, 93, of Bloomington, died at 9:52 AM Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at the OSF Richard Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

Born September 2, 1928, in Carroll, IA, he was the son of Frank and Whilamina Meischeid Lammers. On October 20, 1952, he married Shirley Ann Lohman in Carroll, IA. She died May 9, 2014 after 61 years of marriage.

He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army, one at the end of WWII and one during the Korean War as a Staff Sargent in the 2nd battalion, 9th infantry.

Robert worked for the Chicago Tramrail for six and half years and then for Champion for 31 years.

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10102, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie 150.

Survivors include his two sons, Thomas (Diane) Lammers, and Daniel (Julie) Lammers; one daughter, Janet Gysi; seven grandchildren, Valerie (Chad) Bowman, Michael (Kaitlyn) Lammers, David (Hayli) Lammers, Jared Lammers, Andrew Lammers, Robert Gysi, Will Gysi; four great grandchildren,  Annabelle Brest, Nolan Brest, Amelia Bowman, Layla Lammers; two brothers, Arnold and Gerald Lammers; and two sisters, Doris Ratchford and Darlene Duhon.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one great-grandson, Benjamin Bowman, two brothers, Paul and Raymond, and two sisters, Helen and Rita.

Family will receive friends from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM Sunday, March 6, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Lammers will be 4:00 PM Sunday, March 6, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Rev. Father Dennis Hatungimana officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  Burial will be 9:30 AM Monday. March 7, 2022 at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Greater Peoria Honor Flight and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Charity Foundation.

Elva Mae (Butikofer) Gerst ,10, died February 28, 2022

Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother went home to be forever with the Lord, after 101 years and 10 months of age.

Born in Elgin, Iowa on April 28, 1920, she was the daughter of William and Marie (Grimm) Butikofer. As a young child the family moved to Taylor, MO where she graduated from LaGrange High School on May 13, 1937. She was baptized in the Oakville Apostolic Christian Church on January 6, 1939. Prior to her marriage she was employed in Chicago and Quincy, Illinois. On January 21, 1951, Elva was united in marriage to Paul A. Gerst in Taylor, MO. They made their home on a farm in the Oakville bottoms, and raised four sons. She had a large garden, and many flowers gave color to the farmstead. Paul preceded her in death on December 4, 2001. She continued to live in her own home until November 2019, when she went to Wapello Specialty Care.

 

Elva was instrumental in starting World Relief in the Oakville Church. Many crocheted small balls were sent overseas. She enjoyed quilting for others and her family.

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: William (Judy) of Mediapolis; Joseph (Connie) of Delhi; Walt (Nola) of Mediapolis; and Charles (Charlene) of Morning Sun; nine grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren, and many extended families.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Joel and Edward Butikofer; sister, Ruth Cottrell/Moser; two granddaughters and one grandson.

 

Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2022, at the Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Mediapolis.  A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the Apostolic Christian Church in Mediapolis.  Ministers of the Church will officiate.  A visitation at the church will precede the funeral from 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.  Interment will be held at the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery in Oakville. Donald F. Engler, 80, of Burlington died Monday, February 28, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 9, 1941 in Burlington, he was the son of Francis Frederick and Loretta Cecilia (Gall) Engler.

Donald graduated from Burlington High School in 1962.  He was in the Air Force and served in Vietnam.

On February 11, 1978 Donald married Debbie L. Dougherty in Iowa City.  She died December 1, 2018.

Donald was a black jack dealer for the Catfish Bend Casino and he also was a production worker at PPG.  He enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeye football and he was a Chicago Bears and Cubs fan.  Donald was an animal lover including his 7 cats.

Survivors include nine children Valerie Engler of Burlington, Laura Zurmuehlen of Carman, IL; Hidy, Blackie, Gomora, Ginger, Spice, Tammy and Rose; grandchildren Sara, Ryan, Audrey, Cameron, Kolton, Jacob; great grandson Atticus; sister Jeannette Ojile of Burlington; brother Jim Engler of Iowa City, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter Sandra and sister Marilyn Walljasper.

The visitation for Mr. Engler will be Saturday, March 5, 2022 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Lunning Chapel. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veteran’s Honor Guard.

A memorial has been established.

Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to Lunning Chapel following the visitation.

Russell “Rusty” William Elliott II, 66, of Burlington, died at 3:45 PM Sunday, February 13, 2022, at his home.

Born July 7, 1955, in Clarinda, IA, he was the son of Russell William and Nola Leona Huffer Elliott. On May 14, 1977, he married Mary Kay McQuay at Oak Street Baptist Church in Burlington.

He attended Burlington High School, graduating in 1973 He graduated from Southeastern Community College in West Burlington in 1975. He then attended Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma.

Rusty served for the United States Army from 1977 until 2000 as a Chaplin. He served four terms in Korea and continued his service with the Army Nation Guard. Currently he has been helping with Hope Haven.

Rusty was a member of First Christian Church in Burlington. He enjoyed cooking and loved building and collecting model cars, trucks and planes. He had a yellow Chevy Luv then made a matching model.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kay Elliott of Burlington; one son, Russell William “Bill” (Jessica) Elliott, III; two grandchildren, Alex Elliot and Morrigan Elliott; two sisters, Sheryl Elliott of Shawnee, KS and Brenda (Mark) Maine of Springfield, MO; two nieces, Charla  Peaslee, and Alissa Maine; one nephew, Steven-Mark Andrew (Elaine) Maine and mother-in-law, Mary McQuay of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM with the family to receive friends Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Elliott II will be 10:00 AM Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend David J. Yonker and Reverend Brooke Anthony officiating.  Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery.

William J. Bowman, 59, of West Burlington, died Friday, February 25, 2022 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born June 20, 1961 in Burlington, Iowa he was the son of William A. and Betty June Bowman.

He worked as a mechanic his entire life.  William LOVED LIFE!  He loved working on things and was very mechanically inclined.  He was always there for anyone and everyone.

Survivors include his long time companion Gloria Coen of West Burlington; his three children, Chrissy Bowman, Sean Bowman and William Bowman all of Burlington; two grandchildren J.D. Porter and Athea Porter; brother Rick Bowman of Lowell, Iowa and sister Dixie Winstead of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no formal funeral services for Mr. Bowman.  According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Richard A. Newman, 92 of West Burlington died Saturday, February 26, 2022 at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born April 26, 1929 in Johnstown, NE, he was the son of Arvid and Mabel (Anderson) Newman.

Richard was a 1st class radar man in the navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955.  He completed his Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Nebraska in 1959. On January 4, 1953, Richard married Marilyn Gustafson in Newman Grove, NE.

Richard began his career at International Harvester in 1959 in Chicago, IL. His career continued at several companies in the Midwest, concluding with retirement in 1989 from Case IH. After retirement he was a realtor and owned rental properties.

Richard was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Burlington.

He was a past member of the Rotary Club in Humbolt, IA.  He enjoyed fishing and he could fix anything.  Richard loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the St. Louis Cardinals. “Go Big Red!”

Survivors include his wife Marilyn of West Burlington; children Debra (Neal) Parks of Burlington, Dana Newman of Houston, TX, Paul (Deb) Newman of Marion, IA, Lori (Rick) Fry of Burlington; grandchildren Ryan, Jonathan, Jason, Ciara, Carissa, Amanda, Drake; great grandchildren Damion and Myla; sister Gladys Krinhop of Fort Collins, Co; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

The funeral service for Mr. Newman will be Friday, March 4, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Lunning Chapel with the Reverend Ryan Cosgrove officiating. Family will receive friends one hour before the service begins. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery in Newman Grove, Nebraska at a later date.

Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Faith Lutheran Church.

After the service a luncheon will be held at the Eagles Club.

Peggy Ann Rockhold, age 78, of Lomax, Illinois, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022 at her home.  She was born September 15, 1943 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd “Tuffy” and Elizabeth Nichols Maynard.  On May 7, 1983, she married Henry “Doc” Rockhold in Dallas City, Illinois.

 

Peggy had been employed at General Electric and Champion Spark Plug in Burlington, and retired from Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison. She was an active member of the Grace Bible Church in Dallas City, and served as church hostess for many years.  She enjoyed fishing, shopping, dining out, and spending time with her family.  She truly loved her grandchildren, and enjoyed spending time with them.

Survivors include her husband, three sons: Kevin (Evie) Worley of Gladstone, IL, Kelly (Grace) Worley of Lomax, IL, Kendall Worley of Burlington, IA, two step sons: Shawn Rockhold and Sam Rockhold, both of Huntsville, AL, ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, one brother: Tom (Melanie) Maynard of Pontoosuc, IL, and one sister: Sonja (Henry) Shipman of Dallas City, IL.  She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother: Butch Maynard, and three sisters: Dorothy Gilpin, Daisy Bundy, and Marrietta Hnat.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday March 3, 2022 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, IL with Rev. Charles Anthony  Martin, age 68,  of Livingston, Texas, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen, Texas.  He was born May 17, 1953 in Rockford, Illinois, the son of Charles Otis and Lena Baldridge Martin. On September 1, 1988, he married Mary Jane Morris in Hannibal, Missouri. He was previously married to Debbie Royce.

Charles attended Rockford schools, and later graduated from high school in Maynard, Arkansas. He had a long career as a welder for Butler Manufacturing and Midstate in Galesburg, Illinois.  Later, he managed Lake Storey Campground in Galesburg for five years, then worked for Adventureland Park near Des Moines for two years.  He also worked for Amazon and was a security guard in southern Texas for a time. He returned to Monmouth, Illinois area, where he managed Citizens Lake Campground and also worked in maintenance at Monmouth City Cemetery.

Charles loved being with his family and friends.  Going to church was a very important part of each week, and when wintering in Texas, he and his wife would watch the Ascent Church of Galesburg Sunday services online.

Survivors include his wife: Mary Jane, two step daughters: Caralea (Buck) Link of Oquawka, IL, Maralea (Dennis) Wright of Charleston, IL, one step son: Dickie (Renee) Goff of Biggsville, IL, one sister: Sue Herman of Maynard, AR, one brother: Jimmie (Susan) Martin of Midway, AR, ten grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one son: Robbie Martin, one brother: Carl Martin, and two sisters: Wanda Latham and Audrey Lenderman.
