Kirby Benjamin, 52, of rural Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away at 10:58 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2022 at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.
Kirby was born November 21, 1969 in Rushville, Illinois, the son of Danny and Jane (Sheets) Lieb. On April 2, 1993 he married Lorraine Worley in Oquawka, Illinois. She survives.
Kirby proudly served his county in the U.S. Army. He was currently employed as a truck driver for DOT Foods. He enjoyed his job. He previously worked for Ryner Transport and as welder for Butler Manufacturing.
He was an avid outdoorsman. He always included his family in his hunting and fishing adventures. He also enjoyed watching football, especially the Green Bay Packers.
Survivors include his wife: Lorraine; his mother: Jane Lieb of Dallas City; three children: Tyler Worley of Stronghurst, Kristen Benjamin Havens of Media, Illinois and Trapper (Cheyenne Hiland) Benjamin of Carthage, Illinois; two grandchildren: Ryker and Bryar Havens. Also surviving are two sisters: Shannon Bailey of Dallas City and Misty Hensley of Troy, Missouri, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father: Danny and his grandparents.
Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2022 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Banks & Beals in Dallas City. Burial with Military Rites will follow in Crane Cemetery, near Lomax.

Bonnie Lucille Thomas, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, June 23, 2022 at New London Specialty Care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 30,
2022 at the Ashford Park Clubhouse, 1801 E. Ashford Avenue, Mt.

Eugene J Sperry, 70, of Burlington, died Sunday, July 24, 2022 at his home.
Born January 12, 1952 in Burlington, he was the son of Justin V. and Eloise Jane (Blakeway) Sperry. Gene moved to the family farm in Danville in 1954.
Gene graduated from Danville High School in 1971. On June 4, 1994 he married Rhonda R. Richardson Korf.
He began working at JI Case company in 1973. He retired from the painting department in 2004. Gene was also a commercial fisherman and a taxidermist.
Gene was a member of UAW local 807, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and Danville Racing Association. He liked to go on Wisconsin trips. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the National Hot Rod Association, sprint cars and boating. He loved and knew the Mississippi River.
Survivors include his wife Rhonda of Burlington; daughter Lindsey (Mike) Simpson of Burlington, granddaughter Bailey (Will Gilbert) Skidmore of Burlington and a great grandbaby on the way; brother Dennis (Nancy) Sperry of Danville; numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews; and always his sidekick Hannah Jo.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
Per his wishes cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. There will be no services at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Lorretta Vondean White, 90, of Burlington, died at 11:32 AM Friday, July 22, 2022, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born August 31, 1931, in Ottumwa, IA, she was the daughter of Dean “Dion” and Anna Mae Wyott Manos. When her father died, her mother married Elmer Harnden who raised her since she was a child. On April 17, 1954, she married Donald Franklin White in Lancaster, MO. He died on August 9, 2010.

Lorretta worked for the Winegard Co. for 25 years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She enjoyed spending time with family, and reading books about the Amish. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose, the Eagles, the VFW Auxilary, and the Red Hatters. She loved to shop, and travel. Most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra (Ed) Gerst of Burlington; one son, Alan Dean (Pam) White of Ottumwa, IA; one daughter-in-law, Diane Gilliland of Rock Island, IL; six grandchildren, Michael Gilliland of Rock Island, IL, Gina (Dallas) Cox of Coal Valley, IL, Brett (Leanna) White of Ottumwa, IA, Courtney (Benoit) Igne of Mansfield, MA, Austin (Kadi) White of Grimes, IA, and Katie (Justin) Albright of Robins, IA; eight great-grandchildren, Arthur, Maurice and Leopold Igne, Gavin and Dakota Cox, and Thisbe Albright, Braden Gilliland and Breelea White; and many nieces and nephews. Loretta also leaves behind many cherished friends.

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by one son, Rick Gilliland, two brothers, and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Lorretta will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Reverend David J. Yonker officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery following the service. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall following the burial.

Susan Ellen Brenneman, 80, passed quietly from natural causes at 2:30 a.m. July 24, 2022.

Born in Elkhart, Ind., April 11, 1942 to Alpheus D and Lila Leah Hartman, she was the oldest of seven (Fern, Larry, David, Debra, with Richard and Mary preceding her in death).

She married Curtis Brenneman in Hannibal, Mo., Nov. 12, 1960, who she met attending high school at Iowa Mennonite in Kalona. They were members of the West Burlington Christian Church.

She enjoyed her family, spent time making treasured (and spectacular) greeting cards and loved to talk with people.

She was a homemaker throughout her life, selling Wheatonware and Avon successfully before starting work for Drs. Kent and McGee in 1977, then working at Family Practice, retiring in May 2014.

She is survived by her husband, three sons (Douglas, Randall, Chad), seven grandchildren (Rivir, Cassidy, Drayke, Joel, Mycah, Marissa, Trey), one great granddaughter (Rayna), nieces, nephews, and cousins.

William Henry Laughlin, 92, of Burlington, died at 10:55 PM Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at the Bickford Cottage in Burlington.

Born September 19, 1929, in Dows, IA, he was the son of William Henry Laughlin II and Bertha Ann Whisler. On February 24, 1958, he married Lorraine Ann Briese in Alden, IA. She died on February 5, 2021.

William graduated from Dows High School in 1947 and worked at the family owned Dows Variety and Furniture Store. After moving to Burlington he went on to work as a sales associate for Chittenden & Eastman Furniture for 35 years.

William was a gun enthusiast and a founding member of the Dows Gun Club. He served as a volunteer fire fighter with the Dows fire department. He loved all animals, especially Boston Terrier bulldogs.

Survivors include one daughter, Karanel (Tim) Larson of Burlington, and one grandchild, Natalie Larson of Chapel Hill, NC.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Per his wishes, there will be no visitation or services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society and Great River Hospice.

Otto Richard Groenewald Jr., 61, of Burlington, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the Big Hollow Recreation Area.

Born May 21, 1961, in Ottumwa, IA, he was the son of Otto Richard and Marcella Groenewald. On March 3, 2001, he married Collette in Oakland Mills Campground in Henry County, where the couple served as campground hosts.

He was a 1979 graduate of Burlington High School.

He was a US Army Veteran.

Otto was a retired Staff Rep for AFSME. He and Collette were campground hosts at Big Hollow Recreation Area for many years, welcoming guests and assuring everyone had a great experience.

Otto was a rock hound. He enjoyed nature, camping, and especially loved sharing bad jokes on a daily basis.

Survivors include his wife; Collette Groenewald; daughter, Shayla Grobe of Morrison, IL; daughter, Cory Collins of Littlefield, TX; eight grandchildren; Hunter, Tea, Lyndsey, Katelyn, James, Jasper, Johnathon, and Jacob; three great grandchildren; Jaycee, Kinslee, and Laynie; one brother, David (Sherry) Groenewald of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Donna Marie (Bradford) Snyder, , of Dallas City, Illinois, passed away at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at her home.
Donna was born on December 25, 1956 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the daughter of Don Bradford and Sharon Burr.
Donna was a 1975 graduate of LaHarpe High School. Donna worked several jobs throughout her life, and many times, more than one job at a time. Most notably she worked as a Home Health Nurse for the Hancock County Health Department.
Donna enjoyed knitting, crocheting and especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren.
Survivors include one son: Alan (Dalene) Mowen of Dallas City; one step-son: David Snyder of West Burlington, Iowa; her mother and step-father: Sharon and Richard Reed of Terre Haute, Illinois; six grandchildren: Tifani, Jesse, Drake, Hailey, Nicholas and Damion; one god-daughter: Jamie; three sisters: Ronna Bradford of LaHarpe, Leesa (Carl) Swanson of Terre Haute and Joy Wilcox of Dallas City; one half-sister: Sadena Jackson and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father: Don.
A visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Followed by a service at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Nate McCarter officiating.

George Henry Quinn, 76, of Burlington, died at 1:15 PM Thursday, July 21, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born February 23, 1946, in Illinois, he was the son of Jesse and Cora Krems Quinn. On November 5, 1990 he married Sarah Zachmeyer in Danville, IA.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969. He was a gunner operator on a Hellcat tank.

He was a truck driver for many years, and owned a bar for a few years.

He had a great sense of humor, who was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed fishing. He was a very loving and dedicated grandfather.

Survivors include wife, Sarah Quinn of Burlington, one daughter, Jennifer (Derek) Baker of Burlington; two sons, Richard (Sandy) Quinn of Mediapolis, IA, and Jamie (Katy) Dowell of Gallatin, TN, 10 grandkids, and 6 great grandkids.

He is preceded in death by one daughter and his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A graveside service for George will be at Keokuk National Cemetery at a later date.

Connie E. Martin, 80, of Burlington, died Thursday, July 21, 2022 at her home.
Born February 27, 1942 in Donnellson, IA she was the daughter of Melvin Ernest and Bonadelle Jean (Fullerton) Raid.
Connie graduated from Burlington High School in the class of 1959 and attended Parsons College in Fairfield, IA.
On January 30, 1961 Connie married Robert L. Martin. She was a homemaker and secretary for Raid Quarries and the Burlington Fire Department. Connie attended Grace United Methodist Church.
Connie enjoyed her coffee groups spent with beloved friends. She liked knitting, quilting, sewing and was a member of the First United Methodist Quilters group. She loved watching her grandchildren’s activities which was very important to her. Connie enjoyed playing bridge. She had an infectious sense of humor and loved spreading laughter and joy to everyone.
Survivors include her husband Bob of 61 years; children, Cherie (Hal) Reid of Burlington, Steve (Teresa) Martin of Shell Rock, IA, and Tricia (Randy) Bolton of Osceola, IA; Grandchildren Stacy Martin, Christopher Martin, Emma Bolton and Karly Stoffregen; three great grandchildren; sister Mary Raid and brother Mel (Jolene) Raid Jr all of Granbury, TX; several nieces, nephews, cousins and her many special friends that she loved like family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Patricia Raid-Harrison and Marlene Ann Raid; granddaughter Ally Bolton and grandson Kaleb Lehman.
The celebration of life for Connie will be 2:00 pm at The Loft on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 with Pastor Dennis Coon officiating. At Connie’s request there will be a time for family and friends to share happy and humorous stories. Visitation will be from noon to 7:00 pm at Lunning Chapel on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. William “Dub” Hedgepeth Jr.,91, of Burlington, was reunited in death with his beloved daughter, Laura at 7:45PM, Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at the Klein Center in West Burlington. Sally appreciated all the kindness, care and hugs given by the staff at the Klein Center, Cobblestone Hill and his hospice nurse, Amy.

Born March 4, 1931, in Lawrenceburg, TN, he was the son of William M. and Cora B. Lanning Hedgepeth. On August 11, 1956, he married Sally Ann Hanrahan at St. John’s Catholic Church in Burlington, IA.

He graduated High School in Lawrence County, TN in 1951. He obtained a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Iowa Wesleyan in 1958.

Dub was a proud U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War from January 15, 1951 until January 14, 1955. He was proud to receive his Quilt of Valor on December 7, 2021 on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor at the Klein Center.

He worked as a Capital Budget Director for J.I. Case as well as Riverfront Realty and was the co-owner and operator of Hedgepeth Antiques with his wife Sally.

In high school, he played trombone in the Lawrence County High School Marching Band. He enjoyed going to casinos, buying and selling antiques and taking day trips with his wife. Dub loved attending Midwest Old Threshers in Mount Pleasant where he and Sally had a booth for 17 years in the Antique Building on the grounds. He also enjoyed the company of his cats. Dub was a member of the American Legion, Iowa State Deputies and Sheriff Association and proud member of the NRA. He was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan. He was a kind and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle & friend.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Sally Ann Hedgepeth of Burlington; brother, Paul L. (Donna) Hedgepeth of Fort Madison; sisters, Margaret (Warren) Mehmken of Sperry and Esther Hedgepeth Wright of Dallas, TX; special friend, Mark Miller of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved daughter, Laura and grandchild, Christy, brother, Clifford Hedgepeth, sister Kathleen Annegers, and 2 brothers-in-law, Warren Mehmken and Harold Wright.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
