Burlington, IA-  The Burlington School District has discontinued its backpack food program.

The Hawk Eye reports that Burlington School Director of District Services Brian Johnson said that a combination of supply chain issues and rising costs led to a decrease in food donations.  Thus, the decision was made to suspend the program until supply chain issues could be solved and more donations from the Food Bank of Iowa could be made available.

The Lend-a-Paw pantry at The James Madison Educational Center will still be available to those in need.

Johnson said that the district hopes to restart the program sometime in the near future, but that would require the Food Bank of Iowa to increase its inventory, or the district finding a new source of funding for the project.
