Burlington, IA-  The Burlington City Council will appoint a former council member to replace Councilman Matt Rinker.

The Hawk Eye Reports that Rinker was recently elected to the Iowa House District 99 seat, and he informed the Council on Monday of his resignation effective January 6th.

Burlington City Manager Chad Bird Said that, “The council is then faced then with three possibilities to determine a replacement peer Iowa code, fill the vacancy by appointment, fill the vacancy by a special election that the council can call, or wait and see if there is a petition for a special election after the appointment.”

The city council supported appointing a former council member to fill Rinker’s seat rather than host a special election.

The council will appoint the replacement for Rinker at a special meeting on January 9th.
