Obituaries for Monday December 5th

Doug Crist, 73, of Burlington, died Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington.

Born April 15, 1949, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Donald Franklin and Betty Jane Fiscus Crist. On February 1, 1974, he married Cindi Albright in Stronghurst, IL.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving one tour of combat inland during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970.

Doug was an Iron Worker out of Local #577 and later became the Business Agent for #577, taking care of Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. He retired in 2010 after 41 years of work.

He was a member of the Iron Workers Local #577. He enjoyed being outdoors golfing, pheasant hunting and morel hunting. Doug enjoyed playing cards and loved to spend time with his grandkids.

Survivors include wife of 48 years, Cindi Crist of Burlington; grandchildren, Mackinzie, Makayla, Makenna, and Makynleigh; and brother, Barry (Suzanne) Crist of Mc Queeney, TX.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughters, Jessica and Ashley Crist and brother, Mark Wade Crist.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The Celebration of Life for Doug will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, December 10, 2022 at Simple Gatherings in Middletown. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

A memorial has been established.

James Edward Nelson Sr., 79, of Burlington, died Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Born April 10, 1943, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Arthur and Nelly Janzen Nelson. On January 1, 1967, he married Marsha Larkins in Burlington.

He graduated from Burlington High School then attended Iowa State for two years.

Jim’s father Arthur, built and started operating the Dairy Queen stores in Burlington in 1947. In 1968, the stores were bought by Jim and Ron and it has been family owned and operated ever since. Jim loved his work and would drive by everyday to check on the stores.

When Jim was younger, he enjoyed going hunting and water skiing. He loved going to the casino and play craps, bowling, golfing, ice fishing, and playing cards and other games. Jim watched the news and weather everyday so he would know what to expect at the stores. He loved to travel, especially to Florida with his wife. Jim attended all activities for his grandchildren and loved to take them on trips.

Survivors include his wife, Marsha; three children, Jimmy Nelson, Dawn (Matt) Rogerson and Heather (Edwin) Ellis; eight grandchildren, Morgan (Jarrett) Sykes, Reagan (Jaron) Atteberry, Nathan Nelson, Keaton Chambers, Taran (Michaela) Nelson, Kimber Ellis, Colt Ellis, and Kobe Chambers, four great-grandchildren; sister, Caroline Hoover; sister-in-law, Carolyn Nelson; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Ronald and one niece, Connie.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division St.

The funeral service for Mr. Nelson will be 10:00 AM Thursday, December 8, 2022, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division St., with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the burial.

A memorial has been established for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Miriam A. Winter, 96, of Burlington, died Sunday, November 27, 2022, at her home.

Born October 1, 1926, in Mount Pleasant, IA, she was the daughter of Fred L. and Eva Arnold Oldt. On June 26, 1946, she married Frank E. Winter in Burlington, IA. He died on March 21, 2014.

Miriam worked at IRC, Designer’s Viewpoint and was an account administrator for Standard Register. She retired in 1992.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was past president of Epsilon Sigma Alpha and active in King’s Daughters.

Survivors include her daughters, Diane Hilkin and Julie Winter both of Burlington; two grandchilden, John (Allison) Hilkin of Aurora, CO, and Liz Hilkin of Gainesville, FL; two great-grandsons, Elliott and Desmond Hilkin of Aurora, CO; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Jessie Humphreys and Winnie Cline; and two brothers, Willis and Richard Oldt.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Des Moines County Humane Society.

Shirley Jean Corman, 87, of Sperry, died Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Born May 20, 1935, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Glen L. and Mary E. Dowell Chesnut. On August 12, 1956, she married Warren Corman in West Hill Methodist Church.

She graduated from Burlington High School.

Shirley worked as a nurse for over 40 years. She worked for Burlington Medical Center, Mediapolis High School and for Dr. William Anderson at Old Mercy Hospital.

She was a member of First Congregation Church. Shirley enjoyed cross stitching and loved to play cards, games and crosswords. She loved reading, learning about history as well as cooking and baking. Every fall Shirley and her husband would travel to Branson, Missouri to watch the shows. They also attended SCC Blackhawk Basketball games. Most of all, Shirley loved her family; spending time with her grandchildren to shopping for her great grandchildren.

Survivors include her sweet old codger of 66 years, Warren; daughter, Lynette (Larry) Peterson of NC; daughter-in-law, Donita Corman; four grandchildren, Andrea, Eric, Christopher, and Kayla; three great-grandchildren; and brother, Gary (Mary) Chesnut.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Keith Corman.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, December 5, 2022 at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division St.

Michael David Menke, 36, of Burlington, passed away Monday November 28, 2022 at his home.
Born September 6, 1986 in Burlington, he was the son of David and Kathleen (Francis) Menke. He was baptized in the catholic faith.
Michael graduated from Burlington High School. He worked numerous jobs and most recently was working at Silgan. He enjoyed working on computers and fishing. He loved taking his dog Jordy to the dog park. He was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan and he loved spending time with his children when he could.
Survivors include his three daughters Cameron, Molly and Remy; father David (Kathryn) Menke of Burlington; three half-brothers Tom Patterson of West Burlington, Benjamin (Megan) Patterson of Davenport, Caleb Titus of Burlington; one sister Kim (Nick) LaFauce of West Burlington; grandmother Miriam Francis of Burlington and two stepbrothers Josh and Tim of Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathy Titus and step-father Craig Titus, son Dayton David Menke, grandfather Bob Francis; grandparents Eugene and Darlene Menke and aunts Paulette and Vickie.
The funeral service for Michael will be Thursday, December 8th at 1pm at Lunning Chapel with the Very Reverend Father Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 7th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Lunning Chapel.

Teresa “Terrie” Ann Harris, 65, of New London, died Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at University of Iowa Hospitals. She was born August 13, 1957 in Burlington to Noble Lewis and Janet Mae Brown Boyd. In October of 1978 she married Marion Harold Harris in Burlington.
Terrie was a 1976 graduate of New London High School and was of the Christian faith. She worked at J.I. Case Company, General Electric, and the Marriott at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, before retiring from Champion in Burlington. She also cleaned houses and sold Paparazzi jewelry. She enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel and loved watching her granddaughter Cadance play sports. Terri always put other’s needs ahead of her own and got great pleasure seeing people she knew succeed. She was a very good and loving mother to Crystal.
Besides her husband Harry, she is survived by her daughter Crystal (Michael) Mortimer; stepdaughter Jennifer (Robert) Lipper; and stepson Michael (Tammy Bjorklund) Harris, all of New London; granddaughter Cadence; brother Jay Boyd of New London; one niece and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Stephen C. “Steve” Laird, 75 of Burlington, died Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at the Klein Center in Burlington.

Born November 18, 1947 in Kirksville, Missouri, he was the son of Harry Leon and Betty Jean Daniels Laird. On August 29, 1971, he married Kathy Lee Bullock in rural Scotland County, Missouri.

Steve graduated from the Scotland County, Missouri school system, furthered his education and graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville.

Mr. Laird was a certified public accountant with the McGladrey accounting firm in Burlington, becoming a partner in 1980. In 1986, he joined the Hawkeye Group in Mediapolis, filling the position of corporate controller until his retirement in 2006.

Steve proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. He was a member of the Carthage Lake Club, the American Institute of CPA’s and the Iowa Society of CPA’s. He enjoyed the occasional round of golf and especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy; one daughter, Stephanie (John) Dodge of Burlington; one son, Darin of Johnston; two granddaughters, Anna and Sara Dodge; one sister, Beth (Mark) Grant of Colorado Springs; and many other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

There will be no formal visitation or funeral services for Mr. Laird. A private burial, with military rites, will be in the Memphis Cemetery in Memphis, Missouri at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the Downing House Museum in Memphis, Missouri.
