Burlington, IA-  A suspected drunk driver backed into a Burlington Police Department patrol car, and pushed it into another patrol car, causing minor damage.

According to a news release, at about 11 AM Wednesday, January 25th, Burlington police officers were dispatched to 3138 Sunnyside Ave. to investigate a report of a subject screaming he was being held, hostage.

When officers arrived, they were told the man left the area and were given a description of the truck he was driving.  Officers were familiar with the vehicle and knew it was often located in the 1100 block of Bartlett Street.

Officers went to that location and saw the truck parked in the middle of the street.

81-year-old Gary Rolf was sitting in the driver’s seat, and constantly honking the vehicle’s horn.  When officers exited their patrol cars, Rolf slid over into the passenger’s seat of the truck, pressed the accelerator and shifted the truck into reverse.

The rear of the truck struck the front of a police patrol car and pushed it backwards into the front of another police patrol car.  Officers suspected Rolf was intoxicated due to his unsteady balance and odor of alcohol.

Rolf was arrested and charged with 1st offense OWI, failure to provide proof of financial liability involving an accident, reckless driving, unsafe starting of a vehicle, and operation of a non-registered vehicle.  No one was injured in the collision.
