Homeless man arrested for assaulting hospital staff

West Burlington, IA-  A homeless man was arrested Tuesday, February 21st, for assaulting a staff member at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.

24-year-old Ian Billings was charged with assault on persons in certain occupations-bodily injury.

The Hawk Eye reports that West Burlington Police were called to the Emergency Room at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center for a report of a patient assaulting medical staff.

Police arrived and were informed by a staff member that Billings became upset when they informed him that he would have to be discharged because they couldn’t find placement for him for the night.

Billings then knocked a cup off of a side table and swung his arm while holding a paper, striking a staffer in the face.

Billings told officers he had been asleep and was startled by the staff member, leading to him striking them in the face.

Billings is being held in the Des Moines County Jail on $5,000 cash-only bond.
