Monmouth, Ill.-  Voters in Warren County, Illinois will soon vote on a measure to fund a new jail.

TV Station WQAD reports that the county will decide on requiring 3 quarters of a percent sales tax to build the new jail.  Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards said that the current building has been unsafe and deteriorating for several years.

The new building would cost about $16 million, with construction projected for 2027.

If the new sales tax is passed, it would last about 25 years, unless the building is paid off in that time, and would exclude groceries, farm equipment, prescriptions, and purchases of cars.

The Illinois consolidated election will take place April 4th.
