Obituaries for Monday April 10th

Robert L. “Bob” Martin, 83, of Burlington, died Friday, April 7, 2023 at the Klein Center in West Burlington.
Born January 16, 1940 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Farrell and Dorothy (Carlson) Martin.
He graduated from Burlington High School (Class of 1958) and Parsons College, where he was an outstanding four sport high school athlete and a standout college football player.
He married Connie E. Raid on January 30, 1961. She died July 21, 2022.
After college Bob worked as a teacher and track and football coach for Wapello High School for two years. He then began his career with Proctor and Gamble where he worked for 35 years. After retirement Bob went back to teaching at Wapello High School and was also an assistant girls’ basketball coach. In addition, he coached high school volleyball and middle school softball for West Burlington.
Bob loved coaching little league baseball and softball and the Iowa Games volleyball teams. He loved all sports and especially enjoyed watching his daughter’s and granddaughters’ high school and college softball careers and his grandson’s trap shooting competitions.
He enjoyed fishing and taking annual trips to Minnesota and Canada with family, hunting, spending time on the family farms, his various coffee groups, wintering in Florida and golfing with his friends. He loved dogs, especially golden retrievers and was fondly known as a “dog whisperer”.
He is survived by his three children, Cherie (Hal) Reid of Burlington, Steve (Teresa) Martin of Shell Rock, Iowa and Tricia (Randy) Bolton of Osceola, Iowa; four grandchildren, Stacy Martin, Karly Stoffregen, Christopher Martin and Emma Bolton; three great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Connie, brother Leroy Martin, granddaughter Ally Bolton and grandson Kaleb Lehman.
The memorial funeral service for Mr. Martin will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 15th at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. Dean Graber will officiate. Inurnment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice and The Rally for Reid Foundation.

Ivan Kenneth “Ken” Kelly Jr., 70, of Burlington, died Friday, April 7, 2023 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born March 15, 1953 in Fort Madison, Iowa, he was the son of Ivan Sr. and Sallie B. (Shumaker) Kelly. He married Teresa Hamilton on July 5, 1997.
Ken worked for Champion Spark Plug for over 20 years until his retirement in 2018.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, being outdoors, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and tinkering in his garage. His grandchildren were his life and he loved his time spent with them.
Survivors include his wife Teresa Kelly of Burlington; two sons, Michael J. (Mindy) Shelledy of Winfield, Iowa and Jeff (Tina) Shelledy of New London; six grandchildren, Taylor (Christopher) Stone of Mt. Pleasant, Asia Shelledy of Moravia, Iowa, Zachary Shelledy of Winfield, Iowa, Zander Shelledy of Winfield and Bailey Shelledy and Mason Shelledy both of New London, Iowa; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Peyton and sister Carolyn Johnson.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 12th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Montrose, Iowa.
According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Paul Richard Haas, 69, of Nauvoo, Illinois, passed away at 2:21 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Fort Madison, Iowa.

Paul was born April 13, 1953, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Roy and Frieda (Wilkens) Haas. He married Connie Hopp in 1977. They later divorced.

He is survived by his four children: Kristy (Geoff) Wellman of Burlington, Iowa, Laura (Brandan) Beach of Dallas City, Illinois, Larry (Ashley) Haas of Wever, Iowa, and Danny Haas of Keokuk; eight grandchildren: Kenzie Sprute, Raegan Wellman, Braylan Wellman, Enslee Wellman, Nick Schaefer, Carson Schaefer, Owen Beach and Madelyn Thomas; four siblings: Edward Lee (Rebecca) Haas of Nauvoo, Deborah Jones of Springfield, Illinois, Diane Shoen of Moweaqua, Illinois, and Kevin (Laura) Haas of Hudson, Illinois. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother: Larry and brother in-law: Jeff Shoen.

Paul was a 1971 graduate of Nauvoo High School. He worked for the Colusa Elevator, Nauvoo, Illinois, for 44 years, retiring in 2019. He enjoyed being outside and took great pride in his yard and garden. He enjoyed deer and mushroom hunting and he raised Birmingham roller pigeons for many years. He was an avid sports fan, especially for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Friends may call after 12:00 noon, Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Schmitz-Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Nauvoo, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Nauvoo with Father Tony Trosley as celebrant. Burial will follow in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in his memory for Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

Alice E. Snyder, 96, of Stronghurst, IL, formerly of Burlington, died April 6, 2023 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
Born August 17, 1926 in Ft. Madison, IA, she was the daughter of Edward and Adelaide (Bendlage) Mansheim. On September 20, 1947 Alice married Paul Edward Snyder in Ft. Madison. He died February 1, 1991. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Raritan, IL.
Alice was the Head cook and worked in food service for the Burlington Community School District for 19 years until her retirement in 1981. She volunteered at Burlington Public Schools for 10 years. She spent endless hours volunteering for RSVP for which she was honored by Governor Terry Brandstad. Alice enjoyed all kinds of sewing, making baby quilts, gardening and tending flowers. She embroidered and volunteered for various church activities.
Survivors include one son Daniel (Janet) Snyder of Burlington; one daughter Kathleen (Jerry) Keimig of Stronghurst; four grandchildren Troy (Mary) Snyder, Denise (Ryan) Machholz, Jon (Tiffany) Keimig, Kari (Brian) Higgins; eight great grandchildren Jessica, Abigail, Mallorie, Marissa, Topher, Henry, Breckin, Harrison; one sister Evelyn Westfall of Des Moines, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.
The funeral mass for Mrs. Snyder will be 10:30 AM Friday, April 14th at St Patrick Catholic Church in Raritan with Msgr. Thomas Mack and Fr. Timothy Hepner as co-celebrants. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 4:00 to 6:00 pm Thursday, April 13th at Lunning Chapel. The family will not be present.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for St. Patrick Catholic Church, Divine Mercy Parish, and Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Ada Lorene Gillis, 92, of Burlington, died Thursday, April 6, 2023, at her home.

Born December 5, 1930, in New Boston, IL, she was the daughter of Estel and Mary Emily Cooley Garrett. On August 13, 1949, she married Cecil Jr. Gillis in Burlington, IA. In 1983, he passed away.

She graduated from Dallas City High School.

Ada worked in food service for the Burlington Schools.

Ada liked playing on the slot machines and watching the game show network. She loved the Cubs and got to see them win the Pennant. She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Toni L. Johnson and Lori A. (Tom) Buckman of Burlington; two granddaughters, Kali C. Knoll of Cedar Rapids and Mandy R. (J.R.) Herrick of Winfield; three grandsons, Tony C. (Tresha) Johnson of Coralville, Tyler P. (Hilary) Johnson of Fort Madison and Zachary T. Knoll of Cedar Rapids; four siblings, Diane E. (Warren) Wade of Weeping Waters, NE, Donald E. Garrett of Monmouth, IL, Madeline C. Link of La Harpe, IL, and Frederick L. Garrett of Donellson, IA; nine great-granddaughters; five great-grandsons; many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, grandson, Trent G. Johnson and four sisters, Maxine Smith, Bertha Bender, Orpha Van Skike, and Mary Reed.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A private family Graveside Service will be held at Carman Cemetery.

Florence “Berniece” Pettinger, 90, of Burlington, died Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at her home surrounded by family.

Born May 13, 1932, in Gladstone, IL, the oldest daughter of Sam and Esteline Stevenson. She attended and graduated from Biggsville High School. She attended Western Illinois University where she met and married Wayne Pettinger on May 4, 1952 and moved to Lanark, IL. She raised her family in Belvidere, IL and survived the April 1967 tornado. She moved back to Gladstone, IL in 1997 to be near her family. Along with her daughter, Sue and sister, Angeline, in 2001, bought a house in Dunnellon, FL for the snowbird life and eventually (2010) bought a house on her own in Leesburg, FL. She returned back home in 2017 longing to be near her brother and sisters again.

Berniece embraced a strong work ethic and held many diverse jobs throughout her lifetime. From office manager to technical engineering to casino teller, she liked knowing how things worked and that curiosity gave her delight in lifelong learning.

Everyone thinks they have the perfect mother, but we really did. Just seeing her beautiful face and hearing her voice, you knew you were “home” and “safe”. She left an indelible handprint on our hearts and we will miss her for the rest of our lives.

She will be missed by many, including her children, Susan Bjork of Midlothian, IL, Patti (Rick) Douglas of Sterling, IL and Steve (Karen) Pettinger of St. Joseph, MI; grandchildren, Eric (Sarah) Douglas of Clinton, IL and Kate (Derek) Niewind of Bonaire, GA; four great-granddaughters, Adley and Harper Niewind and Lily and Delilah Douglas; her sisters, Marie Meeker of Mediapolis and Angeline Anderson of Gladstone, IL; three sister-in-laws, Nancy Stevenson of Gladstone, IL, Kay Stevenson of Oquawka, IL, Dolores Stevenson of Burlington, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband, Wayne Pettingers, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Robert Louis Stevenson, J.R. Stevenson, Sam Stevenson, Bill Stevenson, Wendall Stevenson, brother-in-law, Crafton meeker and sister-in-laws, Vernadine and Bernita Stevenson.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The Graveside Committal Service for Mrs. Pettinger will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Carman Cemetery.
