Burlington, IA- The Burlington Police Department and Des Moines County Attorney’s Office hosted National Night Out 2023 on Tuesday, August 1st.

The Burlington PD, along with other local law enforcement agencies and first responders gathered on the Burlington riverfront for an evening of interaction with the public.

Burlington Police Department Major of Operations Adam Schaefer says that the Burlington PD looks forward to National Night Out every year.   “This is our third year since we’ve revamped it,” Schaefer said.  “It gives us an opportunity to visit with a lot of our citizenry that we normally don’t have the chance to.”  “The people that show up down here, they support law enforcement, they support everything we do, and this is a way for us to give back and continue to earn their support throughout the community,” Schaefer said.

Des Moines County Sheriff Kevin Glendening says that National Night Out is an opportunity to build a stronger community.  “This is all about us and being in it together, and by us I mean us as a community,” Glendening said.  “Together, we can do so much more and that’s what we’re looking to do is to build those relationships and to build a stronger community.

Des Moines County Attorney Lisa Schaefer says that National Night Out gives these organizations a chance to interact with the public in a different way.  “It gives the community a chance to see us in a situation unlike how we would normally see them, ” Schaefer said.  ” If you’re encountering someone from law enforcement, in our office, or even the fire department it’s generally gonna be a really bad day, but it’s really nice to allow everyone to see us as people Not just in the positions that we have,”  Schaefer said.
