Obituaries for Wednesday November 8th

Suzanne L. Schoenewe, 70, of Burlington, died Saturday, November 4, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 23, 1953, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Emmert George and Louise Cecelia (Schrader) Schoenewe.

Suzanne worked for Walmart for 17 years.

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Suzanne loved shopping, listening to music, spending time outside and taking walks. She really enjoyed the Christmas season and loved watching Christmas shows, especially the Hallmark channel. Suzanne enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include two brothers, Fred Schoenewe of West Burlington and George (Marsha) Schoenewe of Burlington; five sisters, Tina (John) Graham of Burlington, Pam (Mark) Stuecker of St. Paul, IA, Theresa Wagner of Burlington, Carolyn Hardesty of Burlington and Nanette Schoenewe of Fairfield; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Tom Schoenewe and sister-in-law, Sharon Schoenewe.

The funeral service for Ms. Schoenewe will be 11:00 AM Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street with officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh Funeral Service following the burial.

A memorial has been established for the Oakview Nursing Home.

Ruth Darlene Stratton
, 95, of West Burlington, died Sunday, November 5, 2023, at her home.
Born March 12, 1928, in Aurora, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Walter Ira and Rosa Mae (Grolze) Leymaster. She married Sidney Stratton on June 30, 1951. He preceded her in death on September 13, 2017.
Ruth began her working career as a telephone operator and then for Sylvania and I.A.A.P. She spent her later years helping her husband at their paint and wallpaper store.
She loved taking walks and was an avid reader, with her morning routine beginning with reading her Bible and a cup of coffee. Ruth was an excellent cook and loved cooking for holidays. She enjoyed watching Hallmark movies, completing find-a-word puzzles, bird watching and traveling with her daughters and grandchildren.
She is survived by her three daughters; Kathleen (Michael C.) Hoschek of West Burlington and Linda (Joel) Mason and Joanie (Jon) Snow both of Clear Lake, Iowa; nine grandchildren; Heidi (Derek) Boyd, Amy Blume, Jeremy (Carrie) Lohmann, Jesse (Erika) Mason, Jennifer (Michael) Pope, Zachary (Rehema) Snow, Olivia Snow, Jon (Miquela) Snow and Joshua (Amber) Snow; 23 great grandchildren; Justin (Cass) Boyd, Austin Boyd, Sydney (Landon) Bowman, Paige Lohmann, Mackenzie Lohmann, Natalee Lohmann, Brevin Lohmann, Jackson Rose Mason, Laila Pope, Kameron Pope, Jemma Pope, Jonathan Snow, Josiah Snow, Alex Snow, Andrew Snow, Isaiah Snow, Jonah Snow, Judah Snow, Madelyn Snow, James Snow, Amelia Snow, Aliza Snow and Quinn Snow and four great-great grandchildren, Paislee Bowman, Noah Bowman, Weston Martzhan and Trytan Dobbs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Marjorie and three sisters, Doris Johnson, Helen Youngerman and Jean Nash.
Friends may call after noon until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 9th at Lunning Chapel. Visitation with family present will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 10th at Lunning Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Dean Graber will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for the Burlington Parks and Recreation Endowment Fund or the City Hope Food Pantry.

Melissa Clare Fraise, 72, of Burlington, died November 2, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Health Center in West Burlington.

Born on July 22, 1951, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Melvin O. and Florence (Stoecker) Davis. She married Randall “Randy” Fraise on November 29, 1975. They later divorced.

She worked in production for General Electric for many years.

Melissa loved to go fishing, being outdoors, watching moving, going out to eat Chinese buffet and spending time with her grandkids.

She is survived by her two daughters; Sarah Fraise of Rockford, Illinois and Sally Fraise of New Lenox, Illinois; three grandchildren, Alexander, Desmond and Charlotte; two sisters, Debbie Davis of Burlington and Betty Lou Forbes of Rolla, Missouri; brother Bill Davis of Georgia and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, John Davis in infancy and Robert Davis.

Bertha Ann Yaley Pickle, 92, of New London, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, November 6, 2023 at Park Place in Mt. Pleasant. She was born May 13, 1931 in Lee County Pleasant Ridge Township to Eugene Hayes and Edith Mae Blint Yaley. On August 10, 1950 she married Richard Jack Pickle in New London; he died June 18, 1996.

She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of New London United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and worked at Deerwood Golf Club in New London and Buffs in Mt. Pleasant. She enjoyed gardening, tending her flowers, baking, sewing, doing needlework with her neighbors, and doing for others.

Survivors include her daughters Diane Pickle of New London and Jacque (Richard) Dayton of Bentonville, Arkansas; son Bradley (Dr. Lora Larson) Pickle of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandsons Christopher Cain of Ozawkie, Kansas and Aaron Cain of Edmond, Oklahoma; great-grandson Colson Cain; sisters Velna Smith of Salem, Carol (Dean) Anderson and Marlene (Dick) Lenz both of New London; brothers Merle Yaley of Mt. Pleasant and Marvin (Jan) Yaley of Salem; and sister-in-law Irma Yaley of Mt. Pleasant. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Randyl; daughter-in-law Mary Pickle; brother George Yaley; sister-in-law Hazel Yaley; and brother-in-law Ed Smith.

Visitation will be from 12:00 pm until 6:00 pm Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Elliott Chapel, New London. There will be no family visitation. The funeral service for Mrs. Pickle will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, November 10, 2023 at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Gordon Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, after which friends and family are invited back to Elliott Chapel for light refreshments. A memorial has been established for EveryStep Hospice. Joyce Hardin, 84, longtime resident of Oakville and currently of Mediapolis, died Sunday, November 5, 2023, at the Azria Health Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis surrounded by her family.

Born June 8, 1939, in Louisa County, IA, she was the daughter of Gene and Bonnie Pauline (Fischer) Faris. On January 19, 1957, she married Ray Louis Hardin in Burlington. He passed away November 25, 2002.

Joyce was a homemaker with various part time jobs. She loved sewing, crafting, quilting, gardening, mushroom hunting, berry picking, baking and canning. She was in bridge club for many years with her lifelong friends. Her greatest love was spending time with her family. She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include her children, Mike Hardin of Wapello, Tari Heiniger of Wapello, Lori Hardin of Burlington, Gena (Tim) Heiniger of West Burlington, Joy (Forrest) Branch of Mediapolis; nine grandchildren, Megan (Scott) Spurgeon, Darcy Hardin, Kandi Heiniger Jenkins (JodyJenkins), Kristen (Bryan) Brown, Nick (Cara Rabik) Heiniger, Adam (Jillian Paris) Heiniger, Dustin Hardin, Morgan (Leelu Daigle) Branch, Logan Branch; eight great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister, Janet Johnson of Burlington; many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-in-law, Janet Walker, son-in-law, Doug Heiniger, sister, Sandra Jacoby and brother, Richard Faris.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Friday, November 10, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service.

The memorial service for Mrs. Hardin will be 11:00 AM Friday, November 10, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street with Pastor Dale Frank officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Apostolic Church in Mediapolis following the service. Burial will be in Edwards Cemetery at a later date.

Martha A. Brakeville Mansheim, 64, died Saturday, November 4, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born May 3, 1959, in Coronado, California, she was the daughter of Beverley and Leona (Stodt) Brakeville. She was a 1977 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame.
She married Richard Mansheim on October 10, 1981, they later divorced.
Martha worked for Tenneco Ignition Products for over 29 years. Previously she worked for Chittenden and Eastman, Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penney and served as a union steward for Champion.
She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish.
Martha loved watching and raising birds and was a lover of all animals and cars, especially Ford Mustangs and a collector of “ugly statues”. She was a true cancer warrior and fought it hard. Although stubborn, she had a great sense of humor and loved to pick on people. She had a nickname for all those she loved and was always the first with a good movie quote.
She is survived by her significant other G. Alan Harvey of New Boston, Iowa; her dog “Duke”; four siblings, Tom (Christine) Brakeville of Middletown, Iowa, Katherine Lloyd of West Burlington, Dorothy (Bill) Sanders of Donnellson, Iowa and Matt (Katherine) Brakeville of Burlington; step sister, Christa Burrell of Burlington and numerous much-loved nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Velva Brakeville and Richard and Minnie Stodt.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 10th at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
Memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society or the YMCA Journey House for Battered Women.
According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
