Burlington man arrested for domestic assault and fleeing from police

Burlington, IA-  The Burlington Police Department has announced the arrest of a man for assaulting a woman and fleeing from officers.

According to a news release, just after 10 AM Tuesday, December 5th, Burlington Police Officers were sent to 207 South 8th Street regarding a domestic disturbance and found a woman bleeding from her mouth.

The woman told officers that she had been in an argument with 25-year-old Derrick Phillips, the father of her two children.

She said that Phillips assaulted her by throwing her on the floor and putting his foot on her so she couldn’t get up.  She said that she hit Phillips with a side table which broke, and Phillips then struck her in the arm with a leg from the broken table and punched her in the mouth.

When officers arrived a man, later identified as Phillips, ran out of the back of the house.  Officers pursued him to the 200 block of South 9th Street where he was taken into custody and gave a false name to police officers.

Phillips was arrested and charged with Aggravated Domestic Abuse Assault, Providing False ID Information, and Interference With Official Acts.

Phillips was also charged with out-of-state warrants for Escape From Custody and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
