Iowa Senate Majority Leader announces brain tumor diagnosis

Des Moines, IA-  Iowa Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver on Friday announced he has been diagnosed with a brain tumor.

TV Station KCCI reports that Whitver said in a statement he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor after the end of the 2024 legislative session.  Whitver said he has started treatment and radiation therapy and will remain in his role as Senate majority leader.

Governor Reynolds released a statement showing her support for Whitver.

“Jack Whitver is a strong and capable leader, and a good friend. I admire and support his decision to remain in his role while undergoing treatment, and I am confident in his ability to do so,” Reynolds said. “Kevin and I know this path well, and also the incredible progress that has been made in treatment. We pray for his full recovery, for his wife Rachel and their children, and for his medical team. And I look forward to continuing our work together on behalf of Iowans.”

Whitver, who currently represents District 23, has served in the Iowa senate since 2011.
