The Burlington City Council recognized Fire Chief Matt Trexel on Monday for his 27-year career with the Burlington Fire Department. Trexel, who initially joined the department to pursue a “more stable job,” rose through the ranks and became chief in 2012. He announced his retirement earlier this fall and will officially step down at the end of the year.

During the meeting, Mayor Jon Billups praised Trexel’s leadership, particularly his efforts to revive and realize the construction of a third fire station on the city’s north end through a successful 2023 bond referendum. Council members commended his dedication, with Mayor Pro-Tem Lynda Graham-Murray highlighting Trexel’s impactful annual 9/11 remembrance ceremonies. Trexel’s retirement ceremony is scheduled for Friday, December 27, at Burlington Fire Station #1.
