
Des Moines County officials discussed plans for an 18-bed jail expansion, estimated at $1.6-$1.8 million, to address overcrowding and reduce inmate housing costs. Sheriff Kevin Glendening highlighted potential savings of $975,000 over four years if the project proceeds. Capital expenditures also include $172,000 for FY25 vehicle replacements.
Additionally, county Attorney Lisa Schaefer requested an 18% wage increase for staff, citing retention challenges and rising caseloads, including 60 felonies and over 3,000 misdemeanors in 2024. (40)
The Southeast Iowa Regional Airport also outlined plans for service provider contract renewals and infrastructure upgrades, including a $1.3 million taxiway lighting project. SEIRPC proposed a 5% increase for planning services, and SEIBUS dues are set to rise by 2%.
Final budget decisions will follow union negotiations and insurance updates later this month.
