Obituaries Monday January 27th

Brian Hall, 64, of Wapello, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at the Presbyterian Church of Wapello. The family will be present from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the church. Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025 at the Presbyterian Church of Wapello. The family request all attending the visitation and memorial service to dress in casual attire as that would be Brian’s wish. Brian Scott Hall was born on May 21, 1960, in Burlington, Iowa the son of Dennis “Butch” and Kay Elaine (Holmquist) Hall. Brian was a 1978 graduate of Wapello High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. In 1990, Brian was united in marriage to Kristine Wheeler in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following high school, Brian began his working career at Oakville Feed and Grain. He went on to work at various places including: Levi Strauss, Hanger Clinic and the Bellagio Hotel and Casino. He also was the owner/operator of Odessa Grille. Brian currently was the EMA for Louisa County. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Wapello; where he served as an elder, and a member of the Oakville American Legion. Brian was a certified PADI instructor for scuba diving, he was a trainer of German Shepherds, he was a jump master in sky diving, certified drone operator and was very involved with amateur radio. While in high school Brian was very involved with Boy Scouts going all the way through Order of the Arrow, which took him on a 50-mile paddle through the Boundary Waters. Brian enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, cooking in his Dutch oven for family and friends, playing his banjo and riding his Harley.

Brian will be deeply missed by his wife, Kristine of Wapello; son, Isaac Hall of Scottsdale, Arizona; grandsons, Evan and Wyatt and their mother, Annie Hall; mother, Kay Hall of Washington, Iowa; siblings, Steven (Stacy) Hall of Anamosa, Iowa, Dan (Stephanie) Hall of Tiffin, Iowa and Patti Milligan of Mesa, Arizona; father-in-law, Larry Wheeler of Krugerville, Texas; brothers-in-law, Kenny Wheeler of South Bend, Indiana and Brian Wheeler of Denton, Texas; sister-in-law, Stacy (Mark) Secor of Mesa, Arizona and many nieces and nephews.

Brian was preceded in death by his father, Butch and his mother-in-law, Kathy Wheeler.

Janet R. Murphy, age 82, of Abilene, Texas, formerly of the Carman, Illinois area, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2025 in Abilene.  She was born September 26, 1942 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Glen Howard and Doris Ruth (Dobson) Bernhart.  She was married to Billie J. Murphy on December 28, 1962.  They later divorced.
Janet was a lifelong resident of the Carman area.  She had worked at the Lomax Canning Factory, Mercy Hospital, Sylvania Corporation, Lomax Fast Break, Caseys in West Burlington, and Antennacraft in Burlington.  She also owned and operated BJ’s Club in Gulfport, Illinois and Town & Country Tavern in LaHarpe, Illinois.  She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Good Hope, Illinois.
Survivors include one son, Zachary (Christi) Murphy of Abilene, TX, two daughters, Cindy (Bob) Doyal of Aledo, IL, Tammy (Rick) Bundy of Oquawka, IL, seven grandchildren, Aimee Tisor, Jackie Hennenfent, Angela Williamson, Elizabeth Bundy, Matthew Bundy, Connor Murphy, and Leeam Murphy, five great grandchildren, Collin Hennenfent, Kaylynn Hennenfent, Taylor Rounceville, Eva Rounceville, and James Louck, one great great grandchild, Cole Hennenfent, (and one on the way), one brother, Terry (Sharon) Bernhart, and three sisters, Sonda Blanco, Lavonna Henderson, and Judy (Jerry) Huntington, all of Burlington, IA.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, Fred Radestock, one daughter, Kimmy Lee Davis, one grandson, Zachary “Roo” Bundy, and three brothers, Gene and James Bernhart and Bill Bandy.
The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 27, 2025 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, with Pastor Karen Martin officiating.  Burial will follow in the Carman Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Banks & Beals.  A memorial fund has been established for the Rebekah Lodge of Good Hope, Illinois.  Please visit Janet’s obituary at banksandbeals.com to leave a condolence.

William “W.C.” H. Cole, 79, of New London, died Thursday, January 16, 2025 at his home.  He was born March 11, 1945 in Burlington to Richard William and Faith Lois Eilers Cole.  He married Patti Tweedell Rheinschmidt; she died November 11, 1979.

He was a 1963 graduate of Linn-Marr High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College.  Bill served in the Army in Vietnam as a medical Corpsman.  Upon returning, he lived in San Francisco and taught driver’s ed.

He was a very good craftsman and worked as a carpenter for Harold Cole Construction. He was a Jack of All Trades and could do anything.  Bill enjoyed Nascar races; watching the sci-fi channel and old westerns; loved joking around; spending time with family; and hanging out at Camel Joe’s Garage.  He was a very kind, good natured free spirit.

Bill is survived by his cousins Tom Cole, Kristin Needham and Tara Willman; and a host of friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and close cousins.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated.  A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 31, 2025 at Burge Cemetery, New London with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard.  A memorial has been established. Elliott Chapel, New London, is assisting the family with arrangements.

 

 

Jerry Wm. Hite, 79, of Danville, died Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, West Burlington.  He was born January 6, 1946 in Freeport, Illinois to George R. and Bernadine E. Carpenter Hite.  On December 4, 1971, he married Cheryl “Sherri” Garrels in Burlington.

He was a 1964 graduate of Burlington High School and earned a robotics degree from Indian Hills Community College.  He was a skilled tradesman working for J.I. Case Company in the Experimental Department from June 1974 until June 2008.  He was a member of New London Christian Church.

Jerry loved hunting and being outdoors; was a voracious reader; loved John Wayne and watching old westerns; working on computers; was a black belt in karate; and especially enjoyed visiting with his many friends.

Besides his wife, Jerry is survived by his daughter Allison (Dusty) Furnald of Danville; and his grandchildren Alexis Hite and Kenna and Karlee Furnald.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son Travis Hite; his father and mother-in-law Earl and Doris Garrels; and brothers-in-law David Garrels and Darrell Becker.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 February 1, 2025 at Elliott Chapel, New London, with Pastor Rod Cooper officiating.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 am with the family receiving friends from 10:00 until the time of the service.  According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and inurnment will be held at a later date.  Memorials have been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice and the Danville Fire Department.  Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.
