Egg prices have more than doubled since mid-2023 due to ongoing bird flu outbreaks, with the national average reaching $4.15 per dozen in December. The USDA warns prices could climb another 20% this year.
The outbreak, which began in 2022, has led to the slaughter of over 145 million birds, mostly egg-laying hens. Farmers have implemented strict biosecurity measures, but the persistent nature of the virus, now also affecting cattle, has kept it from subsiding.
Cage-free laws in multiple states have further impacted supply and pricing, with some grocery stores imposing limits on egg purchases. Consumers in certain areas across the U.S. are paying over $7 per dozen.
The USDA has spent more than $1.14 billion compensating farmers for lost flocks, with additional funds allocated for containment efforts.
