Lee County Supervisor Chairman Tom Schulz was cited for public intoxication following a board meeting Tuesday. Schulz, who was seen struggling with speech and focus during the meeting, asked EMS Director Mark Long for medical assistance, fearing he was experiencing a medical issue. He was later transported to the hospital and released after observation.
Later that evening, Schulz was approached at his home by officers investigating a complaint that he had been intoxicated during the meeting. Schulz declined to speak without a warrant and later took a breathalyzer test, registering a .09 BAC.
Schulz maintains he did not knowingly consume alcohol before the meeting and speculated that he may have accidentally consumed mixed drinks. Sheriff Elliott Vandenberg confirmed the citation, with additional information expected to be released.
