Obituaries for Wednesday March 5th

Lisa A. Holman Bolander, 56, of Mediapolis, died Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born November 21, 1968, in Keokuk, IA, she was the daughter of Arwin “Buzz” and Dorothy Sackfield Holman.
Lisa was a kind hearted woman who loved her community and drove a school bus for the Mediapolis school system.  She looked forward to going to work and always enjoyed working with the children.  She enjoyed shopping and trout fishing with her family.  She will be truly missed, but her memory will continue on through all who love her.
Lisa’s family include her husband of 23 years, Carl; son, James Bolander; aunts and uncles, Tillie  Broughton, Gary Sandage, Jim  Sackfield, Linda Ryan; and good friend, Pam (David) Smith.
Sadly, she was preceded in death by her parents and several aunts and uncles.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
The Celebration of Life service for Lisa will be held Monday, March 10, 1 pm, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street, Burlington.

Jack Gustison, 90, of Wapello, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Private family burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Jack’s name. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservices.com. Jack Gustison was born on December 14, 1934 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Ruby (Bouguess) Gustison. Jack was a graduate of Oakville High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1954 until 1956. On October 18, 1958, Jack was united in marriage to Grace Hammond at the Louisa Center Church in Louisa County. Grace preceded Jack in death on January 15, 1993. Jack was later united in marriage to Marcia Hartsock Schneider on September 8, 2001 at the Wapello Methodist Church. Marcia preceded Jack in death on November 24, 2020.

Jack was a man of many talents. He worked as a self-employed contractor, having built many homes in Henry, Des Moines and Louisa County. He was a member of many photography clubs and the Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club. Jack was an avid wildlife photographer having won many awards and honors and even serving as a judge at the county fair. He also loved golfing and wintering in Florida – which allowed him to longer partake in the enjoyment of golf and wild life photography. Jack also spent many hours carving and crafting the most beautiful and intricate bowls.

Jack will be deeply missed by his children, Cathy Jo (Greg) Greiner of Wapello, Don (fiancé Annette Newton), Jim Gustison of Burlington and Corey (Jessi) Gustison of Wapello; grandchildren, Cody (Kenna) Greiner, Ryan (Jennifer) Greiner, Mallory (Spencer) Pflum, Bailey Misenheimer, J.D. Gustison, Gracie Gustison and Jake Gustison; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Paul Gustison of Wapello, Nancy Griffith of Burlington; sisters-in-law, Sharon Zimmer of LeMars and Lorna Hammond of Columbus Junction and special friends, Roy and Lana York of St. Catharines Ontario Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; brothers-in-law, Richard Griffith, John (Mary) Hammond, Richard Hammond, Gene Zimmer and sister-in-law, Jennie Gustison.

Mary Kathryn Krohlow, 80, of Burlington, died Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at her home.

Born May 1, 1944, in Wisconsin, she was the daughter of Edgar A. and Ruth E. Zuelke Krohlow. She attended Seymour High School, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1962. She continued her education and graduated from Wartburg College. Mary started her career in 1966 teaching English and serving as the staff advisor to the students who produced the newspaper, “The Purple and Gray” and the “Pathfinder” yearbook at Burlington Community High School.

Mary served on both the Burlington Public Library Board of Trustees and the Southeast Iowa Regional Library Board of Trustees. She was instrumental in the fundraising efforts for the present public library building. She spent many hours researching local history and published “Streets of Honor”, telling many tales of Burlington’s past. As a long-time board member, play producer and director of the Players’ Workshop, she was currently working on preserving their history. Mary supported many other local organizations with her time and talents: the Burlington Municipal Band, Des Moines County Historical Society, Mock Trials, The Shakespeare Club, WIUM-FM (public radio) and local book clubs.

She loved watching women’s athletics (Wartburg and Iowa games with Caitlyn Clark) and the Green Bay Packers. Mary had many adventures as she traveled the world for Benner Tea Company, Worldwide Chain Store Systems, Inc., Marwood Distribution Systems, Inc., and the British American Consulting Group, but she also enjoyed the time she spent with her friends and fellow volunteers in all of her varied activities. Her time, expertise, mentorship, and contributions to the Burlington-area community will be missed.

Survivors include her brother, Tom Krohlow; sister-in-law, Jan Krohlow; nephew, Todd Krohlow; niece, Tricia Hendricks; great niece, Skyelin Krohlow; great nephew, Austin Hendricks; aunt, Gloria Krohlow and many cousins, extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Patrick J. Krohlow.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

A celebration of life for Mary will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the Players’ Workshop, 1431 Grove Street, Burlington, IA. Burial will be in Cicero Cemetery in Cicero Township, WI at a later date.
