Iowa Senate Considers Lowering Handgun Purchase and Carry Age to 18

Iowa lawmakers are advancing a bill to lower the legal age to buy and carry a handgun from 21 to 18. Supporters say the change aligns with the state’s definition of adulthood and constitutional rights.

Critics, including the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, argue the proposal raises public safety concerns, citing data that 18 to 20-year-olds are disproportionately involved in gun violence and face higher suicide risk.

The bill passed the House largely along party lines and recently cleared a Senate subcommittee. It now awaits consideration in a full Senate committee.
