A new mural project will soon brighten a downtown Burlington alleyway, thanks to a University of Iowa partnership with the Art Center of Burlington and Iowa City-based muralist Ali Hval.

The initiative kicks off this weekend as part of the university’s Initiative for Sustainable Communities. Community members will also get the chance to help with the painting during events later this month.

Known for her vibrant abstract style, Hval has completed more than 50 public murals across the U.S. and currently teaches painting and drawing at the University of Iowa.

Art Center Executive Director Elizabeth Pappas says the project reflects a broader effort to turn overlooked alleyways into inviting public spaces for gathering and exploration.
