At a homelessness town hall held Tuesday at the Burlington Public Library, Transitions DMC Director Joseph Myers announced plans to purchase the former Des Moines County Health Department building at Third and Court to create a shelter for unaccompanied minors.

Myers said many local youths ages 13–17 are sleeping in unsafe conditions, and the new site could house up to 30 children, offering meals, beds, and care through a program similar to foster care. The nonprofit, which already operates a low-barrier shelter on South Main, is fundraising $160,000 for the purchase and $33,000 more for kitchen upgrades. A charity golf event is set for May 17 at Flint Hills to help raise funds.
