The Lee County Health Department is reporting an increase in pertussis cases, also known as whooping cough, and is urging residents to get vaccinated. The illness, which is especially dangerous for infants, is highly contagious and often begins with cold-like symptoms before progressing to severe coughing fits.
To increase vaccine access, LCHD will hold an extended immunization clinic on Thursday, May 22, from 1 to 6 p.m. at its Fort Madison office located at 3 John Bennett Drive. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged by calling 319-372-5225.
Children are recommended to begin the pertussis vaccine series at 2 months of age. Additional vaccines, such as the Tdap booster, will also be available at the clinic.
