A Burlington man was arrested Monday after admitting to firing “warning shots” with a stolen handgun. Police responded to reports of gunfire on South Woodlawn Avenue and later found 20-year-old Trayveon Jefferson in a nearby basement.

Jefferson faces charges including reckless use of a firearm, theft, and bringing contraband into a correctional facility. He also had active drug warrants in Henry and Wapello counties. Officers recovered shell casings and confirmed the gun was stolen during a car burglary.

Jefferson, who is barred from possessing firearms due to prior drug convictions, was also found with marijuana at the jail. He is being held on a $16,000 bond with a preliminary hearing set for June 20.
