Iowa Schools Face Teacher Shortage as Classes Begin

With classes back in session, Iowa is still short over 660 full-time teachers, according to the state’s education department. More than 3,000 education-related positions are also posted on the state hiring site, leaving many districts stretched thin.

Key subjects like special education, math, science, and English remain hardest hit. While the state points to progress, mainly a drop from 941 unfilled positions in 2022 and a recent $96 million investment in teacher pay, educators say the pressure is growing. Additionally, fewer young people are entering the field, and many who do are choosing to teach in nearby states like Illinois and Minnesota, where they reportedly receive greater support and fewer restrictions.

Union leaders warn that lower vacancy numbers may reflect staff cuts and larger class sizes rather than true gains, and they’re continuing to push for better policies to keep teachers in Iowa.
