Great River Health has recognized Shelly Peterson, RN, with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses after her swift response helped save a newborn’s life in West Burlington.

Peterson, a labor and delivery nurse in the Women & Family Center, paused a discharge after noticing signs of distress in the baby and kept monitoring closely. When the infant suddenly stopped breathing, she immediately sounded a security alert and rushed the child to the nursery, where a team worked to resuscitate the child. The baby was later transferred to Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City for further care.

Peterson was honored at a department ceremony attended by coworkers, patients, and family. Great River leaders praised her for acting decisively under pressure and providing the kind of attentive care that makes a lasting difference.
