Fort Madison Fire & Rescue responded to a house fire last Thursday afternoon at 1817 Avenue F after a report of smoke coming from the roof. Firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the house and an active fire in the kitchen area, with extension into the attic. Fire crews had to battle the house fire amid snowy, extremely slick road conditions. Fire Chief Chad Hannum said as conditions became worse, portions of the roof began to sag, and crews were withdrawn from the interior for safety precautions. The cause of the fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen.
